DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team fell against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Monday evening by a 13-7 final score. The Chargers drop to 2-5 overall record while the Trailblazers improve to 5-2 on the season.
Rapid Recap:
- The Trailblazers put up three runs in the bottom of the second featuring a double by Justin Hernandez and a ground rule double from Austin Rachiele to give MCLA an early 3-0 led. In the top of the fourth, senior Cooper O'Brien hit a home run over the right field fence, his second home run this season, to make it 3-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Rachiele hit a home run with two runners on base to extend their advantage to 6-1. Randy Adams also hit a home run shortly after adding a pair of runs to make it 8-1.
- The Chargers responded in the top of the sixth inning after junior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) hit a ground rule double bringing senior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) and senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) home to make it 8-3. Senior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) doubled to right center after pinch hitting for sophomore Brady Holmes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) scoring another two runs for the Chargers to reduce MCLA led to three runs.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Trailblazers brought in three runs off three hits to further their led to 11-5. Jayco Pena doubled down the left field line adding two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give MCLA their largest advantage of the game.
- Colby-Sawyer continued to fight in the top of the ninth inning by loading the bases after MCLA gave up three walks. Choiniere was composed at the plate adding a run for the Chargers after being walked. Matarese also walked with the bases still loaded but Colby-Sawyer would take the loss by a 13-7 final.
- First year Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) picked up the loss going two innings allowing three runs (two earned) with one strikeout. First year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) started the game for the Chargers tossing the opening three innings, allowing eight runs off nine hits with four punchouts. Closing the game was sophomore Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) pitching the final two innings allowing two runs with two strikeouts.
- Rogers led the offense for Colby-Sawyer going 2-for-4 with a ground rule double and 2 RBIs. O'Brien added a 1-for-5 performance with a home run, his second of the season, while Brennan went 1-for-1 with double and 2 RBIs.
