Chargers Drop Doubleheader to Curry College

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped two games during their doubleheader against Curry College on Wednesday at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park.  
 
Game 1 L(7-1):
  • The Colonels jumped on the board first after Joan Peralta singled to center field to bring in one run in the top of the first inning. Brandon Polanco tripled in the top of the third inning and would tag home after Tommy Marshall hit a sacrifice ground out to make it 2-0.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Curry added another run to further their advantage to 3-0. The Colonels converted four runs off four hits in the top of the seventh inning to extend led to 7-0.
  • Senior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) got the Chargers offense going in the bottom of the seventh innings after earning a walk. Next up was first year Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) who singled to center field to put two Chargers on the bases. First year Devin Montalvo (Coram, Mass.) reached on an error which brought home Brennan to give the Chargers their first run of the game. Watson attempted to score home but would get thrown out for the third out ending the game with a 7-1 loss.
  • First year Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) picked up the loss pitching six innings allowing three runs (two earned) with five punchouts. Pitching the final inning for the Chargers was sophomore Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) allowing four runs (three earned) off four hits.
  • Montalvo led the Charger offense going 1-for-4 and earning one RBI. Watson added a 2-for-4 performance which included a double.
Game 2 L(13-3):
  • Watson started the second game by hitting a single to left center for the Chargers. Senior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) laced the ball to right center for a single advancing Watson to third base. Senior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) hit a fly out to center field for Watson to tag up and score the first run of the game putting Colby-Sawyer ahead 1-0. The Colonels responded in the bottom of the first by scoring four runs off three hits to make it 4-1.
  • In the top if the second, Watson doubled to center field to bring home first year Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) making it a 4-2 game. Curry added another run in the bottom of the second after Polanco doubled to left center. The Colonels continued to build their led in the bottom of the third scoring seven runs off four hits to make it 12-2.
  • In the top of the fourth, first year Matthew McDuff (East Providence, R.I.) singled down the left field line advancing senior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) to third who would end up scoring on the play due to an error by the Colonel third baseman making it a 12-3 game. Curry would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth and the second game would end with the Colonels winning by a 13-3 final.
  • First year Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) picked up the loss the for the Chargers pitching one inning and allowing five runs (four earned) off six hits. First Noah Wolgamott (Manchester, N.H.) tossed for one inning allowing four earned runs and getting one strikeout. Closing out was senior Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) pitching three innings allowing one run off three hits and getting one punchout.
  • Watson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and one RBI. O'Brien added a 1-for-2 performance while McDuff went 1-for-3 and each earned one RBI apiece.

The Chargers will play the University of Maine – Farmington tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 4:00 PM.
