Chargers Drop Both in Saturday Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team fell in both matches on Saturday falling to #14 Wentworth Institute of Technology and Emerson College by a 3-0 final. 

Rapid Recap (Wentworth Institute of Technology) L, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-10):
  • The Chargers and Leopards were knotted at 2-2 in first set off of a kill by sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.). Another kill by junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and Davies kept the Chargers trailing by just three points, but a 7-3 run by WIT put the Leopards in front by a 16-9 margin. The Chargers got one more kill by Davies but fell by a 25-14 final.
  • The second set started with a kill by Davies, but the Leopards took a 11-2 run to grab the lead. Senior Finn Husband (Elk Rapids, Mich.) picked up his first kill of the day to start two-straight points by Colby-Sawyer, but Wentworth continued to be successful holding a 21-9 lead. The Chargers added a 6-1 run off a pair of kills by Davies and a service ace by first year Aiden Fortier (Londonderry, N.H.), but the Chargers would fall 25-16. 
  • In the third set the Leopards took a quick 8-4 lead stopped by a kill by Davies. WIT continued to be successful with a 8-1 run, stopped by two-straight points for the Chargers. Ponsness added one final kill, but Colby-Sawyer fell by a 25-10 final. 
  • Davies led the scoring with 11 kills and three digs. Ponsness added four kills, while first year CJ Murphy (Sudbury, Mass.) dished 13 assists.
Rapid Recap (Emerson College) L, 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-14):
  • Both teams were even at 1-1 on a kill by Davies, but the Lions countered with eight-consecutive points. Ponsness picked up another kill for the Chargers, but a 7-2 advantage for the home team pushed the lead to 16-4. Davies picked up one final kill, but the Lions ended the set by a 25-11 final.
  • The Chargers started the second set with a 5-2 lead off of a service ace by Husband and Davies. The lead grew to 9-4 on kill by Ponsness and an ace by senior Phu Ngo (Everett, Mass.). The Lions countered to tie the game at 16-16 before taking a 18-16 lead. A Ponsness kill and three more for Davies kept the Chargers in the game, but the Lions prevailed by a 25-22 margin.
  • Emerson took an early 6-2 lead stopped by a kill by Ponsness. The Lions continued their success with a 7-1 run stopped by a kill for Davies. Another 9-1 run for the home team pushed the lead to 22-7. The Chargers used one final 7-3 run, but fell by a 25-14 margin.
  • Davies led the offense again with nine kills to go along with six digs. Ponsness registered six kills and six digs.
