Chargers Can't Keep Up with Wesleyan University

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team struggled on Wednesday night falling by a 96-68 final to Wesleyan University.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Cardinals coasted ahead by a 10-0 margin in the first three minutes stopped by a bucket for junior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.). Wesleyan led by a 14-4 lead but the Chargers battled back with an 8-2 run highlighted by a pair of threes by sophomore Nate Maldonado (Bronx, N.Y.). The lead quickly jumped back to 20-12 for the Cardinals, but another 6-2 run capped off by a thunderous jam by Cullum cut the game back to just four points for 9:46 to play in the first half. The teams traded baskets, but the Cardinals finally turned up the pressure with an 11-0 run to balloon the lead to 39-24. The Chargers mustered six points in the final four minutes while Wesleyan added 10 to lead 49-30 into the break.
  • Junior Jaisan Parker (Durham, N.C.) checked in for the second half and kick started a 5-0 spurt, but the Cardinals punched back extending the lead to 58-36. Parker drilled a three to cut the lead back to 19, but the home team put together an 13-5 run to hold a 71-44 lead with 11 minutes to play. Maldonado buried a three to slow down the Cardinals, but the lead quickly extended past 30 points reaching a game-high 35 with 2:34 remaining. Junior Owen Morse (Shelbourne Falls, Mass.) and first year Hunter Bates (Wellington, New Zealand) closed the game with strong minutes combining for 12 points on 5-5 from the floor as the Chargers fell by a 96-68 final. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Maldonado had his best showing of the season with 12 points (4-11 FG, 3-7 3PT, 1-2 FT) and three rebounds. Cullum registered 13 points (6-11 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-2 FT), two steals and two boards. Junior Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) tallied 12 points (3-10 FG, 1-3 3PT, 5-7 FT) and four rebounds, while Parker added nine points (3-10 FG, 1-3 3PT, 2-5 FT) in 17 minutes. 
  • Shane Regan led the Cardinals with 18 points (8-11 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT), seven assists and a steal. Sam Pohlman added 15 points (7-8 FG, 1-1 3PT, 0-2 FT) with four rebounds and four assists.

The Chargers will take on Yale University on Friday with a 7:00 PM start in New Haven.
