Chargers Fall to Albertus Magnus in GNAC Opener

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball dropped its opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game by a 82-74 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Falcons jumped ahead by a 7-0 margin in the first four minutes as Justice Washington racked up five early points. Junior Bullen Taban (Phoenix, Ariz.) added four points to cut the deficit to 9-4. Albertus Magnus jumped the lead to 16-6, but graduate student Bryson Jenkins (Gary, Ind.) drilled a three to keep it under double-digits. Another three by sophomore Sadiq Abdullahi (Homestead, Fla.) got the game to 20-14 in favor of the visitors, but the Falcons hung in holding a nine point lead with 9:52 to play in the first half. A 7-0 counter by the Chargers capped off by Abdullahi triple cut the lead to just a single bucket, but Albertus Magnus rolled seven-straight to put the game back at 31-22. The visitors closed the half on a 10-5 run to lead 41-27 headed into the break. 
  • The teams battled back and forth in the second half with the visitors holding the 47-30 lead with 18:08 to play. The Chargers rattled off a 9-2 run highlighted by five-points by junior Cha'Mar Martin (Columbia, S.C.) to cut the lead to ten with 15:24 to play. Another 7-2 punch from the Chargers kick started by a finish by junior Jaisan Parker (Durham, N.C.) cut the lead to just 52-46, but the Falcons countered with eight unanswered points stopped by a finish by junior Chaz Cullum (Omaha, Neb.). Albertus Magnus used another burst to push the lead to 70-53 with 7:01 to play, but Colby-Sawyer would not go away using a 11-2 run highlighted by a Taban poster to put the game within 72-65 with 3:27 to play. Albertus Magnus closed things away making their free throws to escape New London with a 82-74 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Martin paced the Chargers with a career-best 24 points (8-13 FG, 0-1 3PT, 8-11 FT) to go with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Parker came off the bench in the second half with 13 points (5-9 FG, 0-2 3PT, 3-7 FT), two steals and a team-best +10. Taban tallied 11 points (3-4 FG, 5-7 FT), six rebounds and a block, while Cullum added eight points (3-9 FG, 2-4 FT), four assists, four steals and four boards.
  • Washington led the way for the Falcons with 16 points (7-9 FG, 2-5 FT), nine rebounds and a block. Kevin Crawford added 13 points (4-7 FG, 5-12 FT), six assists and five rebounds. 
  • The benches came to play for both teams with Colby-Sawyer holding a 48-38 edge in points off the pine, while Albertus Magnus held a 30-20 point advantage in the fast break.
