Chargers Can't Complete Comeback Against Keene State

NEW LONDON, N.H. – On Thursday, the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team debuted on their home floor falling by a 66-58 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Owls started the game on a 7-1 run over the first seven minutes of a defensive first quarter. Junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) got the next bucket to trim the lead to four, but a 8-0 counter put the lead at 15-3 for Keene State headed into the second. 
  • Holt laced a trifecta to cut the lead to nine points to kick off the second, but the Owls rattled off a 9-2 run to jump the lead to 23-8. First year Larissa Daigle (Fort Kent, Maine) connected on a wacky floater to spark a 8-0 run to get the Chargers within 23-16 with 3:18 to play in the first half. The Chargers added a 7-4 closing run including another triple from Holt to cut the Owl lead to 27-23 headed into halftime. 
  • Junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) kicked off the second quarter with a layup on a pass from sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.). The Owls battled back with six-straight points, but Holt knocked down another three before two free throws from Brewster put the game to 33-30. Keene continued to provide the shots when needed jumping the lead to 47-33, before junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) tried to kick start the comeback with a three to end the third. 
  • Junior Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) started off the fourth hot with eight-consecutive Charger points to cut the Owl lead to five with 5:49 to play. Keene battled back with five-straight concluded by a three for Brynn Rautiola to push the lead to double-digits with 4:49 to play, but a 7-0 run ended by a bank three by Brewster cut the lead to just three points. Rautiola answered hitting glass on a three of her own. Mitchell connected on a basket plus the foul on a dish by graduate student Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) to keep the game within striking distance with 2:52 to play. Colby-Sawyer had a chance to tie things up, but a charge called against the home team gave possession back to the visitors who closed the game on a 9-4 run to pick up the win.

"I'm thankful for the support of an awesome home crowd", said head coach Tim Viola. "They supported us all night long. We need to be better and we will be. We'll get back to work on Saturday and get ready for our next game."

Inside the Numbers:
  •  Brewster led the offense for the Chargers with 15 points (4-8 FG, 1-1 3PT, 6-10 FT) to go with eight boards and two rejections. Holt tabbed 13 points (5-13 FG, 3-10 3PT) and three rebounds. Lucertini registered 11 points (4-9 FG, 3-7 3PT), six rebounds and two steals, while Molettieri added 11 points (2-7 FG, 2-7 3PT, 5-6 FT) and three rebounds.
  • Rautiola paced the Owls with 27 points (9-21 FG, 5-11 3PT, 4-4 FT), five steals and three assists. Aryanna Murray added 10 points (4-13 FG, 2-8 3PT) and five assists. 
  • Turnovers continue to plague the Chargers turning it over 27 times for 27 Owl points.

The Chargers next travel to Plymouth State on Tuesday with a 7:00 PM start.
