BOSTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the young season on Saturday losing to Emerson College by a 69-66 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers jumped ahead by a 7-0 margin behind five points from sophomore Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) and a layup by junior Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.). Another three by junior Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) pushed the lead to 10-2, but the Lions countered with a 8-4 run to cut the lead to four points. Brewster's bucket plus the foul tried to keep the momentum with the visitors, but Olivia Deslaurier knocked down a triple to keep the lead at 17-13 headed into the second.
- The teams traded buckets in the second quarter with two free throws by the Lions to cut the lead to just two, but Colby-Sawyer stayed on the attack with a bucket by Mitchell and a finish by junior Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) to keep the lead at six. The Chargers kept rolling as Mitchell knocked down her second three of the half before another layup by Panagrosso pushed the lead to 29-20. Later in the quarter after five-straight by the home team graduate student Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) powered the lead to double digits knocking down a triple before finding Panagrosso again for two. The Lions stormed back with a closing 14-2 run to take the 38-36 lead into the break.
- Four-straight from Brewster knotted the game at 40-40, but Emerson continued to use the home floor advantage jumping the lead to seven points with 4:21 remaining in the frame. Molettieri sparked another comeback netting a deep three, before an and-one finish by junior Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) cut the deficit to just one. Emerson got a buzzer-beating layup to close the quarter up 55-52.
- Both teams struggled to kick off the final quarter only mustering a bucket a piece in the first five minutes. The Chargers evened the score at 62-62 with 2:05 to play as junior Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) caught fire with eight-straight points for the guests. Brewster gave CSC the lead with a pair of free throws, but a clutch three gave Emerson the lead, which they would hold till the end.

"I really liked our effort and compete level throughout the game", said head coach
Tim Viola. "Offensively we played at the pace we wanted to, moved the ball well and got a lot of great looks, but the difference was our turnovers that gave them easy points and trips to the free throw line."
Inside the Numbers:
- Brewster led the offense with 19 points (6-10 FG, 7-9 FT) to go with five rebounds. Mitchell tallied 15 points (6-9 FG, 2-3 3-FG, 1-1 FT), six rebounds and a pair of helpers, while Holt added 12 points (4-9 FG, 2-5 3-FG, 2-2 FT) and two steals. Panagrosso had a solid day off the bench with eight points (4-6 FG) and two boards.
- Deslaurier led the Lions with 19 points (5-13 FG, 2-7 3-FG, 7-10 FT), seven steals and three assists. Ella Bushee added 16 points (6-10 FG, 4-7 FT) and eight rebounds in the win.
- The Lions secured the win off of 25 points off of 20 Charger turnovers, while Colby-Sawyer finished the day shooting 47.1% (24-51) from the field which was better than the 42.4% (25-59) from the Lions.
