Chargers' Second Half Rally Comes Up Short Against Albertus Magnus College

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball returned to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Tuesday as the Chargers fell to Albertus Magnus College by a 63-48 final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers started off fast jumping ahead 5-0 after a layup by first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) followed by a three-pointer by sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine). Colby-Sawyer continued its charge going on a 7-0 run after a Falcons three to hold the early 12-3 lead. Albertus Magnus started to chip away ending the quarter with the final four points. The second quarter started with sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) nailing a quarter three off a dime from Holt to keep the lead at eight points. The Falcons would counter with 15-straight to hold a 22-15 lead halted by a back-to-back Mitchell layups. Another three by Holt cut the home lead to 26-22, but a buzzer lay-in by the Falcons gave Albertus Magnus a 28-22 lead headed into the break. 
  • The second half started with a pair of shots from deep for sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) to trim the home lead to 30-28. The Falcons responded with a massive 20-0 run to close out the third quarter. The Chargers tried to rally back in the fourth quarter scoring the first seven points of the final frame capped off by a Holt driving layup. The lead pushed back up to 53-36 with 5:25 remaining, before another 9-2 run by the Chargers starred by threes from senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) and Lucertini. A layup by Mitchell cut the lead back to 11 points, but the Falcons held on for the 63-48 win.
Notes & Notables:
  • Holt had an impressive night for the Chargers putting up 10 points (3-13 FG, 2-5 3-FG, 2-4 FT), 12 rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Mitchell was the only other Charger in double-figures with 10 points (5-11 FG, 0-1 3-FG, 0-1 FT) to go along with eight rebounds. Lucertini added nine points (3-8 FG, 3-5 3-FG), four rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Caitlyn Scott led the Falcons with 22 points (6-13 FG, 4-6 3-FG, 6-7 FT), six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
  • The Chargers shot 36% (9-25) from deep compared to 23.8% (5-21) from the Falcons, but Albertus Magnus outscored Colby-Sawyer by a 23-2 differential in the fast break and had a 30-16 advantage in the paint.
Up Next: 
The Chargers will stay on the road on Thursday when they head to Nashua to take on inner-state rival Rivier University with the tip at 5:00 PM.
