BOSTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday during the first tri-match of the season featuring Wentworth Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Rapid Recap (Wentworth) L (25-12, 25-11, 25-13):
- The Chargers got an early led in the first set thanks to a couple errors by the Leopards and a service ace by sophomore Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.) to make it 3-1. After a kill by junior Austin Ponsness (Queen Creek, Ariz.) to put the score at 7-6, the Leopards went on to connect nine points extending their led to 16-6. Davies continued to push the Chargers offensive tallying three kills and a service ace but Wentworth would go on to win the first 25-12.
- The Leopards kept building from the first set securing a quick 5-0 advantage to begin the second set of the match. Senior Phu Ngo (Everett, Mass.) recorded a kill followed by a pair of kills from Ponsness to keep the score close at 8-4. Wentworth grew their led to 10 points after a couple kills by Gabe Tucker and two service aces by Dave Arellanes to make it 16-6. The Chargers disrupted the Leopards attack with Davies recording two more kills but Wentworth would secure the second set with a score of 25-11.
- In the third set, the Leopards once again came out strong taking the first six points of the set. A kill and service ace by Davies along with a set error by the Leopards got the Chargers on the board to make it 6-3. Wentworth was able to earn eight of the next ten points in the set to extend their advantage to 14-5. Although Colby-Sawyer continued to battle, Wentworth would win the match after three sets with the final score of 25-13.
Rapid Recap (MIT) L (25-11, 25-11, 25-14):
- The Engineers took a quick 6-1 led to open the first set of the match. The Chargers got on the scoreboard thanks to a few errors by the Engineers to make it 9-5. The Engineers connected five points together to go up 14-5 which was started by an attacking error from first year CJ Murphy (Sudbury, Mass.) and finished with a service ace from Albert Luo. After a service ace by Rini, MIT would extend their led to 20-7 and take the first set by a final score of 25-11.
- In the second set, the Engineers offensive picked up where they left off taking an early 8-1 advantage. Colby-Sawyer gathered some points off MIT errors to make it 10-4, but the Engineers grew their advantage into the double-digits going up 17-5. The Chargers could not recover from the deficit and would loss the second set by 25-11.
- The third set started back-and-forth with Ngo getting a kill for the Chargers to tie it at 4-4. After the Engineers strung together six points to make it 10-4, MIT gifted Colby-Sawyer a few more points off of errors to bring the score to 11-7. A pair of kills from Davies helped the Chargers stay in the set but the Engineers would go on to defeat Colby-Sawyer in three with the final set score 25-14.
