Chargers Pull Away from Rivier University 68-55

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team picked up their fourth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season defeating Rivier University by a 68-55 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers took an early 6-4 lead as senior Conor Kelly (Charlestown, Mass.) finished a layup from senior Terrence Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.), but the Raiders countered with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Senior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) stopped the run right away knocking down a triple, but Rivier continued to battle holding the lead. A 7-2 Colby-Sawyer run highlighted by a three-pointer and a steal by senior Zack Caraballo (Salem, N.H.) knotted the game back at 16-16. Another 7-0 run by the home team put the Chargers back in front with threes by Caraballo and first year Daniel Jordan (Coral Springs, Fla.). Rivier University battled back to take a 28-25 lead into the break.
  • The Chargers came out of the break fast using five-straight points capped by a driving layup by Harvey Jr. to take the lead back. The teams traded baskets with the Chargers maintaining and growing the lead to double-digits after a 10-0 finished off by back-to-back triples by senior Scott Lampron (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.).  The lead continued to grow with another 6-0 spurt highlighted by a tough and-one by Kelly gave the home team a 58-42 lead with 4:36 to play. A 5-0 Boone run gave the Chargers a 19 point lead with 2:37 to all but seal the victory for Colby-Sawyer. The Raiders cut the lead to 65-55 with 51 seconds left, but clutch free throws by Cummings and Boone put the game away.
Player Spotlight:

"In the first half I was settling for a lot of threes and then I realized I could just go downhill, so I did that in the second half and that got the rest of mine game going", said sophomore Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.). "That helped me out defensively and being able to hit three's as well. We just need to take it one game at a time, we want to get three wins this week and then just keep moving forward from there."

Notes & Notables:
  • Cummings led the offensive output the Chargers with 17 points (6-13 FG, 1-8 3-FG, 4-4 FT) to go with six rebounds. Boone contributed another double-double with 17 points (5-15 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 5-8 FT), 13 rebounds and three blocks. Lampron rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points (5-12 FG, 1-5 3-FG, 1-2 FT) to go with a pair of assists.
