CHICOPEE, Mass. – Sophomore Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) played hero on Wednesday night, knocking down a game-winner as time expired to lift the Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team over Elms College by a 84-83 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers jumped ahead 4-0 as senior Terrence Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.) got the opening layup before pick-pocketing the Blazers and scoring again. Elms countered with a 7-1 run to take their first lead. Colby-Sawyer responded with a 8-0 of their own as senior Scott Lampron (Concord, N.H.) and senior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) knocked down back-to-back triples before another jumper by Lampron. Another five-point spurt by Lampron followed by a Cummings jumper netted the visitors a 20-11 advantage early in the first half. The lead grew to double-digits with 8:42 on the clock following a layup by Boone and another by sophomore Mike Joanou (Burbank, Calif.). The Blazers battled back using a 9-0 advantage to get the game to within a single-bucket, before Cummings drilled his first three of the night to halt the run. Back-to-back triples by senior Zack Caraballo (Salem, N.H.) kept the lead steady at seven points, but Cummings nailed another from long range to push the lead to 41-31. A 5-0 run by the home team in the final minute cut the lead in half heading into the break.
  • The Blazers stormed out of the halftime break with a 7-0 run to take the lead, which was stopped again by a Cummings three. Elms would counter again with a 13-0 run to take a 56-46 lead over Colby-Sawyer. The lead grew to 61-48 in favor of Elms College with 12:23 remaining, but a 12-5 response by the Chargers cut the lead to six points with 9:06 remaining. With 6:37 left Colby-Sawyer took charge using a 14-0 run highlighted by seven points and a steal from Joanou to get back in front by a 77-70 margin. Elms rallied back using a 13-2 run to storm back in front with 15 seconds left. Cummings knocked down a quick triple with eight seconds to play to cut the game to a single point and after a pair of missed free throws the Chargers would have one final attempt with 2.8 on the clock. Cummings got in position and knocked down the game-winner to pickup the big Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win.
