O'Connell Nets Two in Chargers Win Over University of Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team improved their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record to 3-2 after defeating the University of Saint Joseph 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Rapid Recap:
  • The first half was back-and-forth on both ends of the field with the Chargers putting up five shots, four of which came from sophomore Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.), and the Bluejays getting six shots. In the 42nd minute, O'Connell broke through the deadlock to give the Chargers the 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
  • The Bluejays continued to put pressure on the Chargers backline but were unbale to get by senior goalkeeper Alexis LeBreton (Bangor, Maine) who made two saves in the second half. In the 80th minute, senior Grace Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) found O'Connell who netted her second goal to extend the led 2-0.
  • In the last few second of the match, Elizabeth Garlock was able to get past the Charger's defensive and squeeze the ball past LeBreton to end the match with a 2-1 final.
Coaches Corner:
"I'm very proud of our team today for staying composed and finding a way to get a huge win," said head coach Anthony Cosky. "The University of Saint Joseph did a great job possessing the ball and they were very dangerous. We got the 1-0 lead before half and changed our formation in the second half which I thought really made the difference. During the second half, we defended more than we would have liked to, but they weren't as dangerous. We got a goal in transition which is what we needed to go up 2-0. They snuck one in at the end, but we aren't worried about that.

We are excited about the win and understand how important it was, but also know that Regis on Saturday becomes an even more important game for us. It will be a battle and we are looking forward to the opportunity to go to Regis and get a result against a very tough team."

Player Spotlight:
"This was a huge win for us," said O'Connell. "We knew coming in that they were going to be a tough team, but everyone showed up to play. Sophomore Halle Pletzer (Barre, VT.) was back today which was a huge advantage for us going into the game. I'm so proud of everyone for playing until the end and getting this GNAC win. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do Saturday against Regis."

Stats & Figures:
  • O'Connell led the team in shots with seven of her eight shots on target. Junior Kara Keiper had two of her three shots on goal with sophomore Hannah Himes (Willison, VT.) and senior captain Thea Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) each recording a shot.
  • LeBreton made four saves and allowed one goals after playing ninety minutes in net.
  • Although the Chargers were outshot by the Bluejays 16-13 the team held the led in shots on goal with a 10-5 margin.
