NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Chargers baseball team had a long day at Kelsey Baseball Field playing in rain, hail, snow and gusts of wind on Wednesday splitting the two game series with Northern Vermont University - Lyndon.
Game One: (W, 12-6)
- The Chargers opened the day trailing early with the Hornets jumping ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Colby-Sawyer answered quickly in the second as first year Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) hit a sac fly to center field to score junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Hornets took a big lead in the third putting up a five spot to now lead 6-1 heading into the middle innings. In the top of the fourth the Chargers came in clutch scoring six runs with two hit by pitches with the bases loaded, two fielder's choices and a pair of RBI singles by sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) and junior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.).
- The lead continued to grow in the fifth inning as Rogers doubled into the gap to bring around junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). Senior Jackson Parmentier (Higganum, Conn.) followed it up with an RBI groundout to bring home sophomore Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) to extend the lead to 9-6.
- The bats stayed hot in the sixth as Choiniere picked up his third hit in game one scoring Turpel followed by a Camacho two RBI error to get the Chargers the 12-6 advantage.
- First year Erik Rohs (Lovelettsville, Va.) had his first-career start tossing three innings allowing six runs on three hits and four walks with a punchout. First year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) followed picking up his first collegiate win throwing three shutout frames. First year Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) closed things out with an inning of shutout work with two strikeouts.
Game Two: (L, 8-5 )
- In game two the Chargers were the team to jump ahead scoring three runs in the first two innings. First year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) opened the scoring singling home junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) in the first, while first year Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) crossed home plate on a passed ball and a walk. The Hornets countered in the second by getting a pair of runners home on a deep double to right field.
- The Hornets secured the lead for the first time in the fourth getting five runs to lead 7-3 before tacking on a eighth run in the sixth.
- The Chargers tried to mount a comeback in the seventh off a pair of RBI singles from O'Brien and first year Brady Holmes (West Yarmouth, Mass.), but the rally fell short with the bases loaded.
- First year Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) picked up the loss allowing six runs over three innings while setting down five Hornets. Sophomore Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) was next tossing a third of an inning allowing two hits and a run. First year Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) closed things out with two innings of work only allowing a run on three hits.
