PAXTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team clinched a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoff berth on Saturday defeating the Anna Maria College AMCATS by a 16-5 final. The win snapped a three game GNAC conference game losing streak as well as a three game road losing streak.
Rapid Recap:
- The AMCATS took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Chargers responded in a big way closing out the first quarter with three-straight goals. The first years continued to shine as first year Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) finished the first goal, while first year Heather Hanson (Marston Mills, Mass.) added the other two goals of the first quarter.
- The second quarter was no different as the Chargers added three more goals part of a 6-0 goal run as Hanson finished two more of goals and junior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) ended the run with her first of the day. Anna Maria halted the run with the second goal of the day for the home team before Colby-Sawyer rattled home three more goals to take a 9-2 advantage into the break.
- The Chargers continued their statement in the second half scoring the first five goals to push the lead to 14-2. The AMCATS found the back of the net late in the third quarter but junior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) made sure the Chargers ended the quarter with another goal as the lead stood at 15-3 at the end of three quarters.
- Thr fourth quarter went by fast with sophomore Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) scoring the lone goal for the Chargers while the AMCATS finished home two more goals to get to the end score 16-5.
Player Spotlight:
"It was a good day to be a Charger", said junior
Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.). "It was very rewarding to get another big GNAC win. We are looking to maintain this intensity and positive energy as we prepare for the playoffs around the corner."
Inside the Box Score:
- Stevens ended the day as the leading scorer with five goals, three assists for a total of eight points. The eight points is the second highest output of the season for Stevens only behind a 10-point performance against Dean College.
- Hanson and Kuhlthau each registered four goals on the day with Hanson adding an assists, four caused turnovers and seven ground balls, while Kuhlthau added seven draw controls and three ground balls. Marquis and Romo accounted for the remaining goals.
- The ball movement was the key to the success as four Chargers dished more than one assists. Stevens led the way with three while senior Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.), Marquis and junior Madison Gaskell (Pembroke, N.H.) each added two helpers.
- First year AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up win number 11 on the season with four saves in the win.
- The Chargers midfield dominated the draw control winning the advantage 22 out of 23 times. Tompkins led the way with nine by herself. The Chargers also dominated the shots with a 31-9 advantage.
