NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split victories with Lasell University on Saturday, winning game one by a 6-4 final before falling in game two by the same margin.
Game One: (6-4)
- The Lasers jumped ahead early with a sacrifice fly, but the Chargers bats stayed hot with two runs coming across the plate in the bottom half as junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) legged out an infield single, while a throwing error brought home both junior Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) and junior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.).
- Lasell took the lead in the fourth scoring runs on an error and then an RBI single to now lead 3-2. The Chargers surged right back as first year Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) hit a single up the middle which got booted by the center fielder leading to first year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) coming all the way around to score. The Chargers took the lead back later in the inning as sophomore Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) put down a suicide squeeze, which brought pinch runner first year Cross Sierra (Bourne, Mass.) home to give the home team the 4-3 edge.
- The Lasers evened the score once more in the sixth off a sacrifice fly. The Chargers came up clutch as with two outs and MacGlashing in scoring position, Matarese singled up the middle to bring home the winning run. Sasso added the insurance with a deep triple into the gap to lift the Chargers up 6-4.
- Sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) picked up the win for Colby-Sawyer tossing six innings only allowing four runs (two earned), with four punchouts, while first year Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) picked up his first collegiate save closing it out in game one.
Game Two: (4-6)
- The Chargers bats continued to impress jumping up 1-0 after three walks and a sacrifice fly from first year Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.) in the first inning. Sophomore Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) kept the score at 1-0 throwing four shutout innings, while only allowing three hits and striking out two.
- In the bottom half of the fourth first year Dryden Eliason (Little Compton, R.I.) provided instant offense doubling into the gap, before scoring on a passed ball after a sacrifice bunt from first year Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.). The Chargers continued to roll as Sierra singled and advanced to third on a pick off error by the pitcher. Followed by Sasso driving him home with a base knock to put the Chargers up 3-0.
- The Lasers countered scoring three runs in the fifth to knot the game back up at 3-3. Mensch and MacGlashing gave the home team the lead again as Mensch singled and stole second, before MacGlashing ripped a double to right-center to give Colby-Sawyer a 4-3 lead.
- Lasell responded with some help as an error provided help for a first run to get in, followed by a two run double to give the Lasers a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth.
- The Chargers got a runner in scoring position in the sixth, but the no runs came across the plate and the Lasers pulled off a big come from behind win.
- Junior Max Lewis (Durham, N.H.) was issued the loss giving up three runs in an inning plus.
