Chargers Fall to NEC Pilgrims in Doubleheader

NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer College baseball team dropped another pair of games at Kelsey Field in their third straight day of competition. The Pilgrims of New England College shutout the Chargers in game one with a final score of 2-0 before taking game two 8-2.

Game One: (L, 2-0)
  • The Pilgrims strung together three hits in the top of the first inning to earn a quick 1-0 lead over the Chargers. After five unanswered innings, the Pilgrims crossed the plate for their second run on the day in the top of the sixth for a 2-0 victory in game one.
  • Taking the loss for the Chargers was first-year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.). Pitching for five innings and facing 24 batters, the rookie only allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Game Two: (L, 8-2)
  • A big second inning gave the Pilgrims an easy 6-0 lead over the Chargers to start the second game of the non-conference doubleheader. The bottom of the third saw junior captain Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) double down the left field line for the Chargers third hit of the day. Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) would then score Sasso from second with a single to left center to cut the Pilgrims lead down to five.
  • Another Pilgrim run came in the fourth for a 7-1 score with innings five and six remaining scoreless. The seventh and final inning of the day saw both teams earn a run as the Chargers pushed one across the board starting with first-year Cross Sierra (Bourne, Mass.) drawing a walk. Then, pinch hitter Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) singled through the right side to move Sierra to second base bringing up first-year Brady Holmes (West Yarmouth, Mass.). Holmes then drew a walk to load the bases as Sasso hit a deep fly ball to right field to score Sierra. The next two Charger batters would then fly out for the last two outs of the game, dropping the second contest 8-2.
Up next:
The Chargers travel to Plymouth N.H. on Thursday, April 14th for a singled 9-inning game against the Panthers of Plymouth State University starting at 3:30 pm.
