CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer College baseball team picked up a big Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win in game two on Saturday finishing the day with a split against Elms College.
Game One: (L, 11-5)
- The Chargers took an early lead as junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) doubled home first year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.). The Blazers countered with a three spot taking a 3-1 lead early on. The lead would grow to 6-1 after just two innings as the Blazers continued to hit doubles to extend the lead.
- The Chargers got right back into it as MacGlashing hit an RBI single scoring junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). Choiniere followed up grounding into a fielder's choice to score junior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 6-3. The next two innings saw more offense for Colby-Sawyer as junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) doubled home first year Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.) in the fourth, while MacGlashing singled home Turpel to extend his big day in the fifth to cut the lead to a single run. The Blazers answered in a big way with four runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to hold on to the 11-5 win.
- Taking the loss for the Chargers was sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) who threw three and a third innings while allowing six runs on six hits and striking out four. First year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) tossing over an inning allowing four runs. Finishing the first game was first year Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) throwing a single inning allowing a run and punching out one.
Game Two: (W, 4-3)
- The game started with a bang as O'Brien led off with his fifth long ball of the season to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead. Elms got on the board in the third as a pair of runs came across to give the home team the lead.
- MacGlashing got the Chargers the momentum back in the fourth as he singled home Turpel again to knot the game at 2-2. MacGlashing would later score on a wild pitch to push the Chargers up 3-2. The lead would grow in the sixth as Turpel came home on a balk. Elms tallied a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice, but the Chargers pitching closed it out for the win.
- First year Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) picked up a team-leading fourth win of the year tossing five innings allowing three runs and striking out five. First year Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) closed things out throwing two scoreless innings while picking up two strikeouts.
Inside the Box Score:
- MacGlashing finished the day with an impressive 5-7 from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. MacGlashing is now is hitting .412 on the year tied for first in the GNAC.
- O'Brien's fifth home run of the season now puts him in sole possesion of first place in the GNAC.
