FITCHBURG, MASS. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped a non-conference nine-inning game to the Falcons of Fitchburg State University in a midweek away game on Thursday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- The top of the first saw two unearned runs from the Chargers as junior captain Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) scored off an error by the catcher after reaching on a walk. Junior Cooper O'Brien also reached on ball four, collecting the second run of the inning from a passed ball. The Falcons answered back with nine runs on seven hits and one error in the bottom of the first to take a 9-2 lead over the Chargers.
- In the top of the second, first-year Cross Sierra (Bourne, Mass.) reached on yet another error by Fitchburg State. He would then steal second as senior Jackson Parmentier (Higganum, Conn.) would draw the walk on the next pitch to put runners on first and second for the Chargers. A double to center field from Sasso would then score Sierra putting Parmentier on third, and bringing up junior captain Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.). The leader would do his job, providing a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to score Parmentier, making it a 9-4 ball game. The Chargers started the bottom of the second with first-year Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) taking the mound for sophomore Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.). The rookie got out of the inning with no runs, no hits, and two Falcons left on base.
- The Chargers would then score four unanswered runs in the next three innings to cut the Falcons lead down to one in the tail end of the game. The sixth and seventh innings remained scoreless from both sides with junior pitcher Kyle Evans (Nashua, N.H.) shutting down the Falcons with three strikeouts in two innings pitched. Evans was then relieved by first-year Connor Donahue (Uxbridge, Mass.) in the seventh, allowing no runs, no hits, and leaving a Falcon runner on base.
- After a quiet top half of the eighth inning, first-year Matt Bennett took his turn on the mound allowing two runs on three hits until first-year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) would eventually be put in, allowing the last hit and run from the Fitchburg State Falcons.
- The Chargers went three up three down in the top of the ninth to drop the game to the Falcons with a final score of 12-8.
