NORTHFIELD, VT. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team improved their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record to 2-2 after a doubleheader sweep over the Cadets of Norwich University on Wednesday afternoon in Northfield, Vt.
Game One: (10-4)
- The Chargers ran up a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning starting with a Cadet error by the first baseman that would put junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) on base, scoring junior captain Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) from third for the first run of the day. Then, a two-run homer from junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) would bring the Charger lead to three, bringing junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) to the plate. The Massachusetts native would double to right field to place a runner on base in time for first-year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) to score him off a single through the right side.
- On the mound for the Chargers was first-year Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) who shut down the Cadets in the first inning with three back-to-back routine ground balls. Lovelette allowed just one hit on the five innings he pitched keeping the Cadets scoreless until the fifth.
- During the fourth inning, first-year Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) singled to the shortstop to start the inning. He would then be moved to second off a sacrifice bunt from Sasso bringing up junior captain Ian Turpel (Cohasset, N.H.) who was intentionally walked to give the Chargers runners on first and second. O'Brien found the back of the center field fence for his second homerun of the day bringing in three more runs for Colby-Sawyer and extending their lead to seven.
- The fifth inning saw a run from both teams to make the score 8-1, Chargers. Then, in the top of the sixth, the Chargers offense continued to shine as they collected two more runs. Choiniere opened the inning with a solo home run for the first homer of his college career. A couple walks would then load the bases for the Chargers and a wild pitch from the Cadets would score another run making the score 10-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.
- First-year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) would then relive Lovelette in the sixth, allowing three runs on four hits. The seventh remained scoreless as the Chargers collected their first conference win of the season with a final score of 10-4.
Game Two: (12-6)
- After a stellar performance in game one, the Chargers offense continued, earning 12 runs on 13 hits in the second. Starting with the first inning, the men earned two runs on two hits to take an early 2-0 lead.
- On the mound for the Chargers and earning his second win on the season was first-year Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) collected two strike outs in the bottom of the first.
- The Cadets would then knot the score at two after a four-hit inning in the bottom of the second. The Chargers quickly responded with some team work as O'Brien drew the walk and scored off a double from MacGlashing. The bottom of the third would see the Cadets crossing the plate twice to take the lead for the first time on the day off three hits.
- Colby-Sawyer made the difference in the fourth inning, earning six more runs off three hits and forcing a pitching change. The inning started with a walk from both Sasso and Turpel who would bring Choiniere to the dish. The junior then ripped one over the right field fence to start the fourth inning frenzy. Then, with bases fully loaded, another wild pitch from the Cadets would score first-year Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.), putting runners on second and third. First-year Cross Sierra (Bourne, Mass.) drew a walk to juice the bases once again in time for both Wheeler and Sasso to also take four balls, pushing two more runs across the board for a 9-4 score.
- A double from Choiniere to center field and back-to-back singles from O'Brien and Mensch would score another run to bring the Chargers to 10 in the top of the fifth. On the defensive side, Colby-Sawyer would make a call to the bullpen bringing first-year Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va.) to the mound. The rookie would allow only two hits and one run but leave three runners on base to bring the score to 10-5.
- The sixth and seventh inning saw the Chargers score one in each as the Cadets found one in the bottom of the sixth to drop the second game of the doubleheader to the Chargers with a final score of 12-6.
Notes & Notables:
- The team collected a total of 22 runs on the day with 22 hits, and 18 RBI's. O'Brien led the offense in game one going 2-2, with two homeruns, two walks, three runs, and five RBI's. Game two's offense was led by Choiniere who had an incredible day at the plate going 4-5, with a double and a homerun, three runs, and four RBI's.
- Earning his third start of the season on the mound was Lovelette pitching five innings, allowing only one hit, one run, zero walks, and three strike outs. Mullen earned his second win of his career pitching for four innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, one walk, and three strikeouts.
- The teams overall record improves to 5-11 with a conference record of 2-2.

- When asked his thoughts on the games, junior Cooper O'Brien said, "I'm proud of the team for going all out and winning two games today"! "It was great all around and a big team win, go chargers!" he continued.
