Chargers Winning Streak Extends to Six in 16-10 Victory Over University of Saint Joseph

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team continues the best start in program history with a big 16-10 win over the University of Saint Joesph. The Chargers are now 6-0 and 4-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) which puts them in first place.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers jumped ahead first as first year Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) flew in for her ninth goal of the year. The Blue Jays responded finding the back of the net, but the Chargers would not give up the lead as junior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) found the back of the net and kept the home team in front. In the final minute USJ responded answering with a score to head into the second tied up at 2-2.
  • Kuhlthau opened up the second quarter with her second on the day keeping Colby-Sawyer in front. The score evened again before Stevens finished another one at the net followed by first year Heather Hanson (Marston Mills, Mass.) getting on the board to push the lead to 5-3 margin. The Blue Jays responded in a big way with two more scores to tie the game back at 5-5. After a yellow card was given out to a Jays defender, senior Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.) put home back-to-back scores to halt the visitors momentum and give the Chargers a 7-5 lead heading into halftime.
  • Sophomore Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) kept the Chargers rolling scoring to open up the third quarter. Romo answered another Blue Jay goal with number two on the day and kept the lead at three. The Blue Jays continued to battle with back-to-back scores and got the Charger lead to just a single goal again before Hanson struck again finished a free position after a non-releasing penalty to end the third quarter with Colby-Sawyer up 10-8.
  • The non-releasing penalty continued to hurt USJ as Stevens and Tompkins each added goals and kick started a 6-2 fourth quarter and helped the Chargers close out a big GNAC win.
