BOSTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers lost both matches on Saturday, losing first to Emerson College by a 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) final and second to Wentworth by a 3-0 (25-6, 25-17, 25-17) final.
Rapid Recap Emerson:
- The Chargers and Lions battled to a 9-9 stalemate, before Emerson took the first advantage leading 14-10. A kill by senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) kick started another Charger run tying the game up at 17-17. The Lions countered with five-straight, which ended up being the difference as the Lions held on for the 25-21 win.
- The second set started strong for the Lions quickly jumping ahead 13-6. The Chargers rallied back with four-straight points as first year Andreas Bump (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) picked up two kills and first year Lucas Lizotte (Hampstead, N.H.) picked up a pair of service aces. The lead grew once more to 18-13, but another 4-1 run had the Chargers down 19-17 late in the set. The Lions held strong ending the match 25-20.
- The Lions looked to put the Chargers away leading 8-2 early in the third set. The lead continued to grow reach 18-6 before a 10-2 run had the Chargers right back into it. Emerson finished off the Chargers on a 5-1 run and won the match 3-0.
Rapid Recap Wentworth:
- An 11-1 lead for Wentworth propelled the number 10 team in division three to a 25-6 set one victory.
- The second set looked the same with an 11-2 lead for the Leopards early on. The Chargers battled back going on a 7-1 run starred by a pair of kills by Plagata. Wentworth closed it out on a 6-1 run to finish the Chargers comeback at 25-17.
- The Chargers looked to win their first set of the day by jumping ahead 4-1 over the Leopards behind a service ace from senior AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.).The Leopards quickly countered taking back the lead and storming ahead 13-7. The Chargers tried a late run, but Wentworth held on for a 25-17 win.
Notes & Notables:
- Plagata ended the day with 16 kills to lead the team, while also having 12 digs. Senior Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) added nine kills and eight digs.
- Gnieski had a stellar day passing with 36 assists, nine digs and a pair of kills.
