Baseball Surrenders to Anna Maria AMCATS

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games to the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon at Kelsey Fields.

GAME ONE: L (9-0)
  • The Chargers first conference game of the 2022 baseball season did not go their way as the team remained without a hit until junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) put a stop to it with a base hit up the middle to break Fili Veras' no hitter.
  • With Anna Maria quickly putting numbers on the board in the first and fourth inning, most of the AMCATS scoring came in the fifth and sixth to take game one 9-0 over the Chargers.
  • Starting on the mound for the Chargers and taking his third loss of the season was sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) with first-year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior Kyle Evans (Nashua, N.H.) closing out the first game.
GAME TWO: L (7-4) 8-INN
  • The second game of the 7-inning doubleheader would see a tied ball game in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings with the score knotted at four.
  • To start, first year and Rookie of the Week award winner Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) got out of a stressful situation early in the second inning when an error out in right field would eventually put two runners on base for the AMCATS with one out. Mullen provided another routine fly ball and a big swinging strike out to get his team out with no runs on the board for Anna Maria.
  • Trailing by one with two outs, the Chargers loaded the bases with singles from junior captains Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) and Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) and a drawn walk from junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, VT.) in time for O'Brien to step up to the plate. The junior then ripped one over the right fielder's head to score two and take the lead for the first time on the day. A single from first-year Ben Mensch (Tampa, Fla.) would then score Choiniere and O'Brien for a 4-1 lead over the AMCATS.
  • Anna Maria College quickly answered back running up two more runs off three hits in the top of the fourth to cut the Charger lead to one. First-year Erik Rohs did an extraordinary job in the top of the fifth, leaving three runners on (Lovettsville, VA) after a strike out and a great defensive play by shortstop Griffin Wheeler (Penacook, N.H.) to get the Chargers out of the inning with the one-run advantage.
  • Then, in the sixth, an inside the park homerun that found the deep corner of the field would knot the score at four going into the seventh which remained scoreless after an incredible catch from the opposing second baseman who got the AMCATS out of a bases loaded jam.
  • First-year Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, VT.) would then be entered to pitch for Rohs allowing three runs on four hits to drop the second game 7-4, AMCATS.
Notes & Notables:
  • Today's games marked the earliest home baseball games played at Kelsey Field since March 22nd, 1997, when the Chargers defeated the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College 16-4.
  • The teams overall record moves to 3-11 with an 0-2 conference record after today's contests.
  • Overall, the team collected a total of nine hits, four runs, and one error on the day.
