Chargers Fall in Straight Sets to Lasell University

NEWTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers dropped its third-straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Thursday falling to Lasell University by a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-14) final.

Rapid Recap:  
  • Lasell used the home floor advantage to snatch the momentum going on an opening 10-2 run, which was stopped by a senior Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) kill. The Chargers would score two-straight to cut the lead to 11-5, but the Lasers countered with a huge 9-0 run to now jump the lead to 14 points. A pair of kills first by graduate student Andrew Kovacs (Wellesley, Mass.) and then followed by senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) tried to get the visitors back into the set, but Lasell was too strong winning the set 25-10. 
  • The Lasers continued their success scoring six-straight points, which was eventually stopped by a kill by first year Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer battled back with a four point spurt to cut the deficit to 12-10 highlighted by a kill and an assist by senior AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.). Lasell took control once again with a 10-2 surge to push the game out of reach to finish off the Chargers 25-14. 
  • The Chargers jumped in front in the first set 5-4 with three big kills by Miller. Lasell countered again with a big run of seven-straight points to lead 11-5. Colby-Sawyer got a pair more of kills by Gnieski and Plagata, but the Lasers were too strong defeating the Chargers 25-14.
Notes & Notables: 
  • Gnieski was the top performer for the Chargers tonight with 13 assists, three kills and four digs. Plagata notched a team-high seven digs to go along with five kills and a pair of assists. Miller added five kills, two digs and an assist. 
  • Brenden Joyce led the Lasers with 11 kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks in the win. 
  • The Chargers sit in eight place in the GNAC standings with six conference games remaining.

The Colby-Sawyer Chargers head to Boston, Mass. for a tri-match versus Emerson College and Wentworth Institute of Technology with the first match starting at 1:00 PM.
