Chargers Drop Both Contests in Tri-Match with Regis College and Emerson College

BOSTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers lost both matches on Saturday, losing first to Regis College by a 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 27-25) final and second to Emerson College by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 27-25) final.

Rapid Recap Regis:  
  • The Pride jumped ahead early taking a 14-4 lead midway through the set. The lead grew to 21-7 before the Chargers used a 4-0 run of their own highlighted by a kill by senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.). The Pride would eventually finish off the Chargers 21-12. 
  • The second set was a battle from the beginning with the Chargers going on a 4-1 run starred by two service aces by first year Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer would use another 4-1 run later in the set to jump the lead to 16-11 with first year Alfredo Hidalgo (Lawrence, Mass.) scoring a service ace of his own.The Chargers held on to the lead and finished with the 25-22 win. 
  • The third set started all Pride scoring seven-straight points halted by a kill by Plagata. The lead would continue to jump leading by as many as 13 points in the 25-12 win.
  • In set four Colby-Sawyer took a 3-1 lead behind a stellar kill by senior Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.). The lead continued to grow jumping to 8-4 due to four-straight errors by Regis. The Pride stormed back in front with an 8-0 run to now lead 12-8. The Chargers battled back with four-straight points jumping back in front 19-17. At 25-25 the Pride closed things out with back-to-back kills for the set win.
Rapid Recap Emerson:
  • The first set featured a back-and-forth fight with the first run being a 4-0 in favor of Colby-Sawyer to give them a 10-8 lead behind a pair of Plagata kills.The game became tied again at 15-15 with the Lions surging for eight-straight en route to a 25-16 win.
  • In the second set the Chargers earned another early lead starting up 5-2 sparked by a kill by graduate student Andrew Kovacs (Wellesley, Mass.). The runs continued this time with Emerson using six out of seven points to jump ahead 8-6. Three more kills by Plagata would not be enough as the Lions continued to lead earning the 25-18 win.
  • The Lions took the early lead this time having a 6-2 advantage early. A 6-2 run by the Chargers gave the visitors their first lead at 14-13. Another 5-0 surge by the Chargers gave Colby-Sawyer a 23-22 lead behind a pair of kills by Miller and Plagata. A 5-2 run put the match away with Emerson victorious by a 27-25 margin.
Notes & Notables: 
  • Plagata ended the day with 22 kills to lead the team. He added seven digs and a pair of service aces. Miller tallied 14 kills, 16 digs and two blocks. First year Christopher Huynh (Methuen, Mass.) added eight kills and six digs.
  • Senior AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) had a stellar day passing with 50 assists, eight digs and a pair of kills.
