DAVENPORT, FLA. – Despite junior captain
Tommy Sasso's (Grafton, Mass.) homerun in the ninth inning, the Colby-Sawyer baseball team closed out their 2022 Spring Trip to Florida with a 2-3 loss to the Greenville University Panthers on Saturday morning at the Northeast Regional Park.
Rapid Recap:
- The game would remain scoreless until the top of the fourth after a single from the Panthers would put a run on the board for a 1-0 score. The Chargers offense struggled, collecting only three hits going into the ninth with junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) singling in the first, and first-year Cross Sierra (Bourne, Mass.) earning hits in both the third and the sixth in his first appearance at third base.
- Trailing by three in the bottom of the ninth, Sasso would rip one over the right field fence on his first pitch of the at bat for a solo homerun, earning his second of the season and avoiding the shutout. Junior Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) would then single to right center to keep the Chargers alive bringing up Choiniere who earned his second hit of the day, doubling to right field. A passed ball then scored Turpel from third and advanced pinch runner Brady Holmes (Yarmouth, Mass.) to set the Chargers trailing by one. The Panthers would then collect three straight outs to take the ball game 3-2.
Notes & Notables:
- On the defensive side, sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) was given the rock for his second start of the season as a pitcher, and his ninth overall. Rogers pitched seven complete innings, facing 28 batters, and allowing only one earned run with eight hits and six strikeouts.
- Relieving Rogers was first-year Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) in his fifth appearance of his rookie season. Spratt pitched the final two innings, facing nine batters, and allowing two earned runs on three hits.
- At the dish in his eighth start behind the plate was first-year Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) throwing three runners out on the day in attempts to steal second.
