AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After a split doubleheader with the UMPI Owls the day before, the Colby-Sawyer Chargers dropped a 10-3 ball game to the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College on Friday morning at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
RAPID RECAP:
- The first inning would see junior captain Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) touch the plate off a single to the left side from junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.), who collected his first of two hits on the day, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Polar Bears. However, Bowdoin College answered back with a double off starting pitcher Matt Miller (Dracut, Mass.) to score a runner from second to knot the score at one.
- The bottom of the second would change the score to 2-1 after a single down the left field line would be followed by a bad throw to score another Bowdoin run. Junior captain Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) cleanly fielded a ground ball to get the Chargers out of the inning, leaving runners on second and third. The junior would then single to the shortstop, beating the throw to place a runner on base for Colby-Sawyer. After a sac hit from junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) advanced Turpel to second, O'Brien would collect his second RBI of the game scoring Turpel off a single to right field, evening the score at two heading into the first half of the third inning.
- The Polar Bears would then score two more within the next two innings and eventually flood the gates with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. The bottom of the sixth saw quite a few position changes for the Chargers, giving junior Ben Mensch (Marblehead, Mass.) his first appearance in left field, first-year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) his first time behind the plate, junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) first inning at second, and first-year Brady Holmes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) at center field. The team allowed Bowdoin one more run to put the score at 10-2 before earning another Charger run in the top of the eighth to finish 10-3, Polar Bears.
