DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers split their doubleheader against the Colonels of Curry College with a walk-off win in game two at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida on Wednesday afternoon, improving their overall record to 2-6.
GAME ONE:
- Junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) started the 10-5 victory over the Owls with a solo home run in the top of the second to put the Chargers on the board. Earning the start for the Chargers was first-year Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) providing a routine ground ball and back to back strike outs to keep UMPI at zero going into the second.
- After a quite second inning, the top of the third would start with a triple from sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) followed by a hit by pitch on senior Jackson Parmentier (Higganum, Conn.) to put runners on first and third. Leadoff batter and junior captain Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) would then hit a shot over the shortstop into the left center gap to score Rogers and earn his third RBI of the year. Fellow junior captain Ian Turpel (Cohasset, Mass.) collected his first of five RBI's on the game bringing in Parmentier and advancing Sasso to third, bringing up junior Jake Choiniere (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) to the plate. The junior would then ground out to second scoring Sasso to place the Chargers at four.
- A double early in the inning and a line drive down the right field line would earn the Owls their first run of the day. Then, with bases loaded and one out, a strike out for Mullen would put them at out number two before a line drive up the middle would score two more to show a 4-3 score. Mullen would eventually get out of the inning with a big strike out to head into the fourth.
- The fourth showcased Mensch reaching on an error, advancing to second on a sac bunt from junior Ben Brennan (Marblehead, Mass.) and reaching third off a passed ball just in time to score off of first-year Bailey Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) base hit to make it a 5-3 ball game. A couple more Owls errors will score three more runs for the chargers to extend their lead to five in the top of the fifth. Two more runs on each side would be scored for a final of 10-5, Chargers. Colby-Sawyers overall record improved to 3-6 as the Owls took their ninth lost of the season.
GAME TWO:
- The Owls ran a quick 3-0 lead over the Chargers in the first inning after a couple errors and hit by pitch. In the second half, the Chargers responded taking back a run with some small ball to move Sasso who reached on a hit by pitch. A single to left center from Choiniere and a base hit from Mensch would score Sasso putting the Chargers on the board. Unfortunately, Mensch would be caught stealing to end the inning trailing by two.
- In the fifth, the Chargers matched the Owls six runs and raised them one with a total of six hits to decrease the Owls lead to one. The passing of the bat began with a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line from Sasso who would then be moved over to second off a single from Turpel. A double from O'Brien would spark the scoring frenzy for the Chargers bringing in both Sasso and Turpel. Then, with runners on first and third, O'Brien touched home off an error from the opposing shortstop which allowed sophomore Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) to reach first with first-year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) standing on third. MacGlashing would then score off a walk and a hit by pitch to put the Chargers at six with the bases juiced. Two more singles from the Sasso/Turpel duo would score the remaining three for the Chargers.
- The owls earned three more insurance runs after a rocket shot hit to Choiniere with bases full and a 13-9 score. The seventh would remain scoreless to split the Thursday morning doubleheader.
