NASHUA, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team suffered its fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss on Tuesday night falling to inner-state rival Rivier University by a 3-0 (11-25, 19-25, 23-25) final.
Rapid Recap:
- The first set saw the Raiders best set of the night featuring a 6-1 opening run. An early kill by senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) got the Chargers back into the contest, with the visitors only trailing 9-6, but a counter 10-3 run gave the Raiders a double-digit lead en route to a 25-11 opening set win.
- In the second set Rivier jumped ahead 5-2 before a 6-0 run by the Chargers led by a pair of kills by first year Christopher Huynh (Methuen, Mass.) gave Colby-Sawyer a 8-5 lead. The Raiders bounced back using a late 9-0 surge to take a 19-12 advantage. A pair of kills by first year Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, Vt.) tried to get the Chargers back into the set, but Rivier held on to take a 2-0 advantage.
- Set three opened up with a Plagata kill to put Colby-Sawyer up 1-0 for the first time of the night. Both teams continued to battle with five lead changes early on in the set with the Chargers eventually taking the first real advantage using a 8-2 run capped off by a senior AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) ace to take a 14-9 lead. A 6-1 rush by the Raiders evened the game once again at 15-15, but another pair of kills by Davies gave the Chargers a 20-17 advantage. The Raiders took the lead for the final time using a 5-0 run to take a 22-20 lead before holding on late in the set for the win.
Notes & Notables:
- The offense was led by Davies who had five kills on eight attacks for an outstanding .625 kill percentage. Davies also contributed an assisted block and a dig in the loss. Plagata continues to impress with a team-high eight kills tonight to go along with three digs, while Huynh added five kills, a block and a pair of digs.
- Gnieski continues his stellar passing from the setter role with 17 assists on the night.
- First year Alfredo Hidalgo (Lawrence, Mass.) led the team in digs for the third time this year picking up five more digs tonight.
