Chargers' Second Half Struggles Continue in 75-56 Loss to Raiders

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team lost its third-straight contest on Monday night falling to inner-state rival Rivier University. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers jumped ahead early behind a pair of layups first by starting junior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) followed by reserve first year Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.). The Raiders would jump back in front, taking a 7-4 lead before a 7-0 run highlighted by a first year Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) three put the Chargers back in front.
  • Rivier used the remaining time in the first quarter to tie up the game at 11-11 heading into the second. In the second the visitors took the lead before a Molettieri triple put the game back at 19-19. The Raiders continued to hold control using a 10-4 closing run to keep the lead into the halftime buzzer. 
  • The third quarter started with a 4-0 Charger run highlighted by another finish under the bucket by Stevens, which cut the visitor lead to just a single basket. A 12-2 counter by the Raiders jumped the lead to double-digits at 41-29 midway through the third quarter and following five Colby-Sawyer free throws the Raiders caught fire from deep pushing the lead to 56-38 heading into the final frame.
  • In the fourth the lead continued to grow for the visitors hitting a game-high 26 points at one point. The Chargers closed the game on a high note with a 11-4 run starred by seven points from Brewster.
Notes & Notables:
  • Brewster led the offense off the bench posting 13 points (4-8 FG, 1-1 3-PT, 4-4 FT) and four rebounds. Stevens also put up a great effort with eight points (3-8 FG, 2-4 FT), eight rebounds and a block. First year Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) added 10 points (4-17 FG, 0-5 3-PT, 2-3 FT), five rebounds and three assists. 
  • The Chargers owned the offensive glass tonight edging the Raiders 18-6, however could only muster 10 second chance points. Both teams also had five rejections apiece. 
  • Lyric Grumblatt led the Raiders with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and a pair of blocks in the win.

The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team will head to Nashua to face off against Rivier University in the second half of their two-game series.
