Chargers Storm Back From 16 Down to Defeat AMCATS 98-90 in Overtime

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team picked up a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win on Saturday defeating Anna Maria by a 98-90 final in overtime.

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers attacked out of the gate jumping to a 12-7 lead following a pair of triples by sophomore Deonte Flowers (Sumter, S.C.).
  • The AMCATS stormed back taking control and using a 7-0 run to jump te lead to 13 with 7:46 left in the first half.
  • A first year Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) 8-0 run brought the game back to a 37-36 advantage for the visitors, before Anna Maria closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a eight point lead into the break.
  • The AMCATS took control of the game in the second half jumping the lead to 16 points in a blink of an eye. 
  • With 6:15 left in regulation the Chargers were trailing by by a 76-62 margin before storming back with a 11-0 run capped off by a junior Terrence Harvey Jr. (Smyrna, Ga.) three-pointer.
  • Junior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) evened the score with a layup with eight ticks on the clock, which led to a AMCATS wild shot at the buzzer falling short and taking the game into overtime.
  • Senior Deondre Smith (Garland, Texas) owned the overtime period scoring eight points including a wild sequence starting with an an and-one layup to give the Chargers a 84-82 lead, followed by a step-back three with a defender in his eye on the next possession with 1:24 remaining in the period.
  • Cummings followed on the next drive down with a dagger triple which pushed the game out of Anna Maria's reach. 
Player Spotlight:

"First things first, shout-out to my coaches and teammates", said Deondre Smith following his career-high 26 points. "I couldn't do it without them, but I felt good getting back out there. If you're feeling it you got to keep going. I just kept shooting and teammates trusted me and got me the ball. It's great to get the win."

Notes & Notables: 
  • Smith led all scorers in the game with 26 points (8-13 FG, 1-2 3-PT, 9-10 FT) off the bench in only just under 20 minutes on the floor.
  • Boone notched a big time double-double with 20 points (9-13 FG, 2-2 FT) and 12 boards.
  • Cummings tallied 22 points (7-21 FG, 4-13 3-PT, 4-4 FT), four assists and three steals, while Flowers added 16 points (6-12 FG, 4-6 3-PT) and five rebounds.
  • Trevian Grenon paced the AMCATS with 23 points on 8-12 from the field. 
  • The Chargers only had the lead for 6:16 of game action compared to the 33:41 time for Anna Maria.
