NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell to 10th in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings after an 94-90 overtime loss at the hands of Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
Rapid Recap:
- The Monks started fast jumping to a 10-4 advantage. The Chargers answered with a 5-0 counter sparked by a junior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) layup followed by a first year Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) three.
- Saint Joseph's College continued to hold the momentum jumping ahead 32-22 and holding an 11 point lead heading into halftime.
- In the second half action went back and forth with the Monks continuing to hold onto a double-digit lead. It wasn't until there was 1:48 left in regulation that the Chargers brought the deficit to 81-73 heading into the final stretch.
- A defensive stop led to a junior Scott Lampron (Concord, N.H.) hitting a pull-up three to trim the Monks lead to five. The next possession saw a hustle steal in the backcourt by Cummings, which gave junior Zack Caraballo (Salem, N.H.) an easy layup at the rim to bring the game to 81-78 and get the Dan & Kathleen Hogan Sports Center rocking with 45 seconds left.
- The Monks would miss a three on the next way down the floor and intentionally foul Cummings, who went to the line and knocked down both free throws. The inbound pass went awry and great on ball defense by junior Terrence Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.) forced the turnover making it Chargers ball down a single point with 10 seconds left.
- Lampron would draw a hard foul, however would only split the free throws knotting the game up at 81-81. The Monks in transition saw a path to the bucket, but an incredible chase down block by Boone forced the game into overtime.
- In the extra frame Boone started things off hitting a jumper and giving Colby-Sawyer their largest lead of the night at that point leading 83-81.
- The Monks answered back taking the lead with a under a minute remaining knocking down back-to-back threes and jumping ahead by 92-89 margin.
- First year Dylan Santosuosso (Pelham, N.H.) drew a foul on a three-pointer with 19 seconds left. Santosuosso would hit the first and then see the other two shots fall short. In a scramble the Monks leaked out for a layup to seal the victory.
Notes & Notables:
- Cummings led the Chargers' attack with 22 points (6-16 FG, 5-14 3-PT, 5-6 FT) with 17 points of his 22 coming in the second half and overtime.
- Boone had a big night scoring 19 points (9-14 FG, 1-3 3-PT) to go along with six rebounds. Harvey Jr. put together his best game of the season with eight points (2-7 FG, 2-3 3-PT, 2-2 FT), six assists and three steals off the bench. Caraballo added 10 points (4-11 FG, 2-7 3-PT), three assists, three rebounds and a clutch block during the comeback.
- Griffin Foley paced the Monks with 26 points, six rebounds and four assists in the crucial win for the Monks.
