NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team opened up their 2022 season with a dual match against the Bears of Suny Potsdam on Thursday, January 13th, after a 674-day hiatus.
Game 1:
- Set one of game one consisted of seven total Charger kills, with two each coming from first-years Andreas Bump (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and Lucas Lizotte (Hampstead, N.H.). First-years Christopher Huynh (Methuen, Mass.) and Isaac Davies (Hinesburg, VT.) joined senior AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) in the collection of the remaining three kills of the set.
- After falling 25-22 in the first set, the Chargers continued to show grit as they went head-to-head with the Bears at arm's reach for the majority of set two. Tied at 17 after a serving ace from Bump, the Bears began to separate themselves taking a four-point lead over the Chargers. An impactful attack by senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) gave Colby-Sawyer the next service. Despite their efforts, the men dropped set two with another 25-22 score.
- Trailing by two in the third set, the Chargers went on a four-point run sparked by another kill from the hands of Bump to take the lead 16-14. Both teams went kill for kill receiving point after point until the score evened at 20. Plagata's attack overpowered the Bear's defense to take back the lead in the tail end of the match. However, Potsdam found a way to overcome and took the final set 25-21 to take game one.
Game 2:
- Attacking errors got the best of the Chargers in set one of game two as the men fell 25-18. Davies, Huynh, and Plagata equally recorded a kill each with Bump and Plagata providing serving aces to the team.
- With a short bench depth due to injuries and Covid-19 related protocols, the Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team showed heart as they battled till the end. Trailing by nine, the Chargers went on a quick four-point run including another kill by the senior Plagata and an ace from Huynh to cut the deficit to five before taking another set loss, 25-18.
- After a long night of battling with the Bears, the Chargers had their closest set of game two, losing 25-21 to end the night. Davies added two more kills to his total to end his rookie debut with a total of six.
