Women's Volleyball Wins Five Set Match Over Husson

QUINCY, MASS. – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team beat Husson University in five sets on Friday night. Senior captain Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) controlled the offense for the Chargers with 42 assists on the evening. In the fifth and deciding set, junior Ameesah Cotten (Newburgh, N.Y.) and junior Mia Harmon (Concord, N.H.) both had two kills for the Colby-Sawyer.

Set Breakdown:
 
  • The Chargers started off the first set by going on two, three-point runs. The runs were highlighted by four attack errors by Husson that made the score 7-3 early on in the first set. The Eagles bounced back, cutting the Charger lead to one. Freshman Makaila Blinne (Palm Bay, Fla.) had two straight kills to bring the Charger lead back up to four. Both points were assisted by Allen. Later on in the set Colby-Sawyer went on a seven-point scoring streak. Four attack errors by Husson and two kills by Blinne increased the Charger lead to nine. The Eagles tried to battle back, but the Colby-Sawyer offense proved to be too much. The Chargers won the first set 25-17.
  • The Chargers got right back to where they started in the second set, starting it off with a three-point lead. Junior Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) had a kill to put Colby-Sawyer up six. The Eagles cut the lead to three, making the set score 13-10. A kill by Blinne and multiple attacking errors by Husson gave the Chargers back an eight-point lead. The Colby-Sawyer lead was cut to one after back-to-back three-point swings by Husson. Senior Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) had a big ace late in the set to put the Chargers up one. After the Eagles returned the favor by taking a one-point lead, the Chargers got three straight points, including a kill from junior Kaytlin Young (Goffstown, N.H.). Colby-Sawyer won the set 27-25
  • After dropping the first two sets, the Eagles came out firing in the third. They jumped out to a 7-3 lead early. The Chargers tied the set up at eight after a kill by Mohammed found its way to the hardwood. Colby-Sawyer went up 15-10 after back-to-back hall handling errors by Husson. The Eagles would battle back, tying the game up and eventually taking the lead. A Harmon kill tied the game up at 20 after a huge Charger run. Points went back and forth until both met at 25. Husson then took control and got the two points they needed to win the set.
  • The Eagles started the fourth set with a 5-3 lead. The Chargers got the advantage down to two after a Mohammed kill made the set 9-7. Husson then jumped out to a 12-8 lead which was quickly let go by a three-point flurry by the Chargers, highlighted by a service ace from freshman Shaelyn Thornton (Scarborough, Maine). The Eagles then went on a run of their own, putting them up by seven. They would not relinquish the lead and won the set 25-19.
  • In the third and deciding set, both teams went back and forth for the first 10 points. The set was tied at nine, until Werner had a kill that started a three-point swing for Colby-Sawyer. The Eagles got within two, but the Chargers answered back with three straight points to win the set and the match.
 Notes & Notables
  • Werner had a season-high 12 kills for the Chargers.
  • Freshman Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) had a team-high 11 digs.
  • The Chargers had 49 kills opposed to the Eagles who had 44.

Colby-Sawyer stays in Quincy to take on Regis and the host school, Eastern Nazarene College. The first game is set for noon and the other is scheduled for 4 p.m.
