Kaelen Close Tosses One-Hitter in Win Against D'Youville

SANFORD, Fla. – March 11, 2020 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team defeated D'Youville, 12-0, at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium as part of the team's trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The game was scheduled for nine innings, but was called after seven due to a 10-run rule.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-5. The Chargers will play a doubleheader against Gordon on Thursday at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. D'Youville falls to 0-4. The Spartans are slated to play Penn State-Fayette on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Chain of Lakes in Winter Haven, Fla.

Jake Choiniere went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice and three RBI. Ian Turpel was 3-for-4 with three singles and a pair of stolen bases. Michael Roy had a pair of hits with two runs and two RBI, while Cooper O'Brien was a homerun short of the cycle.  

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Jake Choiniere knocked in Tim Unczur with a sacrifice fly to left to open the scoring for Colby-Sawyer.  

The Chargers plated two more runs in the bottom of the second, benefiting from some Spartan miscues.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tommy Sasso put down a perfect bunt to reach on a single and Ian Turpel came around on a throwing error on the play. Later in the frame, Jake Choiniere had a two-run single to center to put the Chargers on top 6-0. Cooper O'Brien, Michael Roy (2), Turpel, and Ben Lewis added RBI in the inning to give the Chargers a 12-0 advantage after the 5th inning.

In the top of the seventh with two outs, Logan Lipowski roped a single to center to break up the no-hit bid by Colby-Sawyer pitcher Kaelen Close.

Close finished the game with 7-innings of one-hit ball and 10 strikeouts. He faced just 24 batters.

Kyle Nash was saddled with the loss after 4.1 innings and eight earned runs allowed.
