AUBURNDALE, Fla. – March 12, 2020 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a doubleheader with Gordon on Thursday at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex as part of their spring trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Colby-Sawyer won game one 5-4, while Gordon took the second game 5-3.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 3-6 on the season. The Chargers were originally scheduled to play a twin bill with MCLA tomorrow, but due to travel restrictions those games have been canceled. Colby-Sawyer will play a pair of nine inning games against RPI and NYU beginning at 3 p.m. at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, Fla. Gordon goes to 8-5 on the season.
GAME ONE – COLBY-SAWYER 5, GORDON 4
After two scoreless innings, Colby-Sawyer broke through in the top of the third with a two-run homer to left by
Tim Unczur that scored
Ian Turpel who reached on a double.
The Fighting Scots responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third. They tied the game with a pair of sacrifice flies by Tim Oh and Matt Paulsen and then took the lead on a run-scoring double from Erik Gauer.
Colby-Sawyer took a 5-3 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth frame.
Jesse Galanti knocked in
Tim Unczur with a double to right center.
Cooper O'Brien then hit a two-run single to left to score
Jake Choiniere and Galanti.
Gordon cut the deficit in half with a run on a double play in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-4, but that's where the score would remain.
Colby-Sawyer pitcher
Derek Griffin tossed a complete game to earn his second win of the season. He surrendered four runs on eight hits and struck out six.
Gordon hurler Joe Pedulla also went the distance in the loss. He gave up five runs on 10 hits and struck out eight.
Four Chargers recorded two hits in the game, including
Tim Unczur,
Jesse Galanti,
Danny McCrystal and
Ian Turpel. Unczur scored twice and knocked in a pair.
Erik Gauer led the Fighting Scots with two hits in three at-bats. Josh Popovitch scored twice.
GAME TWO – GORDON 5, COLBY-SAWYER 3
Michael Roy hit an RBI single up the middle to score
Ben Brennan and give Colby-Sawyer a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third, Tim Oh put Gordon on top with a two-run double to left field that scored Nico Gennari and John Lagerfeld.
Lagerfield added to Gordon's lead in the fourth with a single to left. The Fighting Scots tried to get another run in on the play but
Cooper O'Brien made a perfect throw to get the runner at the plate.
Colby-Sawyer answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
Cooper O'Brien brought in
Danny McCrystal, who reached on a double, and then later scored on a wild pitch.
Gordon went in front in the top of the sixth when Gennari got down a squeeze bunt that scored Cole Winkelman. Colby-Sawyer pitcher got out of further danger with a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
Colby-Sawyer threatened with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but Mark Gadaleta got a fly out to strand a pair of runners.
The Fighting Scots tacked on run in the seventh. Winkelman doubled down the left field line to bring around Shane Demers who led off the frame with a single.
The Chargers got a runner on base in the final inning, but the rally was erased with a game-ending double play.
Mark Gadaleta went the distance on the mound to earn his third victory of the year. His line read three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
Tim Unczur took the loss after six innings of work. He gave up four runs on 10 hits, while striking out six. He also led the Chargers at the plate with two hits.
Winkelman finished with a perfect day with the bat. He turned in a 4-for-4 effort with an RBI and a run. Lagerfeld went 3-for-4, while Oh added a pair of hits and RBI.
