NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 14, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team was edged by Simmons, 5-4, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Mountainside Racquet and Fitness on Saturday afternoon.
Simmons improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC. Colby-Sawyer drops to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Chargers began the match with a 2-1 lead after winning at the top two doubles spots.
Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China) and
Alexa Conlin (Westborough, Mass.) continued their dominant play this season with an 8-2 triumph over Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) and Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam). The No. 2 tandem of
Amira Eid (Pelham, N.H.) and
Juliet Henderson (Swanzey, N.H.) earned an 8-5 victory over Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) and Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.). The Sharks got on the board with an 8-4 win at the third spot behind strong play from Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) and Leah Bonis (Bath, Maine). The defeated
Margaret Fox (New Orleans, La.) and
Hannah Nasser (Middletown, R.I.) by an 8-4 score.
Yang moved to 5-0 in singles action with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Nguyen at the top flight, while Eid also won in straight sets over Mariski 6-2, 6-2 to give Colby-Sawyer a 4-1 lead.
Simmons then began the comeback and won the remaining four singles matches to take the match 5-4.
Johnson earned a comeback win over Conlin at No. 2, while Bonis also came away with a three-set victory at the fourth flight.
McKeever defeated Fox 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5.
Libby Weed (Brooksville, Maine) got the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the sixth flight.
