NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 9, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team defeated Regis College, 3-1, in an important Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match Wednesday evening. Colby-Sawyer won by scores of 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-12 overall and 3-3 in the GNAC. The Chargers begin a long road trip tomorrow with a 6 p.m. contest at Fitchburg State. Regis dips to 6-12 overall and 2-3 in conference action. The Pride will play a tri-match on Saturday at WPI with Fitchburg State.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) led all players with 15 kills. Colby-Sawyer senior
Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) finished with seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore
Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied a double-double of 36 assists and 15 digs. Senior
Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) picked up a team best 18 digs. Senior
Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) and first-year
Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) added nine kills apiece. Junior
Bre Sheehan (Stillwater, N.Y.) had four aces.
The Pride were led by a 12-kill effort from senior Lauren Butt (Topsfield, Mass.). She hit a match best .400 and added five block assists. Senior Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) also reached double figures in kills with 10 to go with 12 digs. Sophomore libero Mica van der Meulen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) registered a match best 19 digs and added four aces.
In the first set, the Chargers fell behind 15-7 after a kill from sophomore Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.). Colby-Sawyer then went on a 10-2 run, capped by a
Naarah Cox kill, to tie the set at 17-17. With the scored tied at 23-23,
Bre Sheehan gave the Chargers the win with two straight aces. The set featured eight ties and six lead changes.
Colby-Sawyer trailed for most of the second set before tying the score at 20-20 after a
Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) kill. The teams traded the next four points before a Cox kill, a Regis error and a Straubel ace ended the frame 25-22 in favor of Colby-Sawyer.
Regis raced out to a 19-9 thanks to strong serving by van der Meulen. The Chargers didn't back down and came all the way back to tie the score at 22-22 with a kill by Werner. The Pride scored the final three points on a Colby-Sawyer service error, a van der Meulen ace and a Whalen kill to win 25-22.
The fourth match was tightly contested and had 10 ties and five lead changes. With the score tied at 16-16, Colby-Sawyer got hot on the offensive side of the ball with four kills out of the next six points to take a 20-18 lead. The Chargers finished the set with five straight points and
Naarah Cox ended the match with her seventh kill.
