Women's Volleyball Outlasted by Southern Maine

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 30, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team was outlasted by Southern Maine in an exciting five-set non-conference match on Wednesday evening. The Huskies won by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 27-29, 25-17 and 15-9.

Prior to first serve, Colby-Sawyer recognized its four seniors for their dedication and contribution to the women's volleyball program. Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.), Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.), Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.), and Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) were honored.

Southern Maine improves to 15-15 and will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a tri-match at Keene State. Colby-Sawyer drops to 16-16 and will conclude the regular season with a conference tri-match at nationally ranked Johnson & Wales with Norwich on Saturday.

The visitors came out clicking on offense with 14 kills on .317 hitting to cruise to the first-set victory. After the Chargers held an early 4-2 lead, Southern Maine rattled off a 7-0 run, capped by a Joie Hared (South Salem, N.Y.) ace. The Huskies held a comfortable lead for the rest of the frame to win 25-18.

The second set featured 12 ties and the Chargers collected 15 kills to Southern Maine's 10. Colby-Sawyer was at set point with a 24-21 lead, but the Huskies scored three points in a row to tie the set. The Chargers then benefited from a pair of Southern Maine errors to take the set 26-24.

The third set was back and forth with 13 ties and eight lead changes. USM took a 24-21 lead after a Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) kill. Facing set point, the Chargers responded to tie the score at 24-24. The Huskies had another set point at 27-26, but Colby-Sawyer came back once again with three straight points to take the win 29-27.

USM raced out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth and never looked back to cruise to a 25-17 win to tie the match at two sets apiece.

The Huskies carried the momentum into the deciding set and got out to a 11-3 lead. Colby-Sawyer battled back to make the score 13-9 after a pair of kills, but USM closed the match with the next two points.

Hared and Jannarone led the Huskies with 11 kills apiece. Senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn.) added 10 kills and 22 digs, while sophomore Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) registered nine kills, 27 assists and 23 digs. Junior libero Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn.) picked up a team best 24 digs.

Rebecca Straubel led Colby-Sawyer with a match best 16 kills. She added 19 digs. Sophomore Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) was second on the team with 11 kills, while Naarah Cox added 10 kills. Sophomore Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with 36 assists and a match high 25 digs. Morgan Flynn tallied 20 digs.
