NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 20, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team earned a 3-1 non-conference victory over UMaine-Farmington at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-7. Today's win marks the second-straight victory over UMF after dropping the previous seven meetings. The Chargers will resume Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday at Simmons. UMF falls to 3-12. The Beavers will host North Atlantic Conference (NAC) foe Thomas on Tuesday.
UMF had a couple of early chances to score but was denied by a couple of spectacular defensive saves by Colby-Sawyer senior
Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.). Lapham moved into sole possession of first in career defensive saves with seven.
The Beavers finally broke through with less than five minutes to play in the first quarter when Chloe Horn sent a pass across the front of the cage that was redirected into the goal by Kasey Talarico for her sixth tally of the season.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Colby-Sawyer was awarded a penalty stroke.
Kailyn Lapham converted the try into the lower left corner of the cage for her first goal of the season and second of her career.
The Chargers took the lead with less than a minute to play in the second frame when sophomore
Whitney O'Brien (Mont Vernon, N.H.) recorded her second goal of the season.
Colby-Sawyer added an insurance goal in the third quarter on a penalty corner. First-year
Bella Silva (Danvers, Mass.) inserted the ball to the top of the circle to senior
Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine). Jones took a couple of steps inside the circle and ripped a shot by everyone for team leading eighth goal of the season.
UMF had a few chances in the fourth quarter and outshot Colby-Sawyer 5-0, but Colby-Sawyer's junior goalie
Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) kept the Beavers off the scoreboard.
Ladd finished with five saves in the win for Colby-Sawyer. UMF goalie Katelyn Rouleau made two stops in the loss.
