Women's Volleyball Serves Southern Vermont 3-1 Loss

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 25, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team defeated Southern Vermont, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at the David L. Coffin Field House. The Chargers won by scores of 24-26, 25-15, 28-26 and 25-16.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-7 and will play a tri-match on Saturday at Suffolk with Mass. Maritime. Southern Vermont suffers just its second loss of the season to drop to 11-2. The Mountaineers return to the court at MCLA on Friday at 6 p.m.

The Chargers received 14 kills from first-year Maddie Bromley (Truckee, Calif.). Senior Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) also reached double figures with 10 kills. First-year Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a season-high 41 assists. Junior Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) collected a match best 30 digs. First-year Maddie Conroy (Middlebury, Conn.) chipped in eight kills.

Southern Vermont was led by a 14-kill effort from senior Liv Sowles (Sacramento, Calif.). Sophomore Nikki Ramirez (West Covina, Calif.) had 10 kills and 21 digs. Junior Meg Maddalena (Portola, Calif.) contributed eight kills and five block assists. Senior libero Heidy Benitez (Tulare, Calif.) added a team best 24 digs.

The Mountaineers were able to escape with the 26-24 first-set, which featured nine ties and five lead changes. Maddalena recorded one of her four kills in the set to give the Mountaineers their 25th point and then won the set on a Colby-Sawyer miscue. Murray and Bromley had four kills in the frame. Ramirez recorded five kills for Southern Vermont.  

Colby-Sawyer responded with a convincing 25-15 second-set victory. The Charges held Southern Vermont to just two kills en route to the win.  

The third set was much like the first and had 17 ties and 10 lead changes. Colby-Sawyer used a balanced attack for 13 kills and had five aces to edge Southern Vermont 28-26. A Katarina Hornung (Stratton, Colo.) tied the score at 26-26 for the Chargers and then the visitors committed a pair of errors resulting in the two-point win.

The Chargers mirrored the second set and won handily 25-16 to pick up the victory.
