NEW LONDON, N.H. – May 1, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader to Castleton University on Tuesday afternoon.
Castleton won by scores of 9-3 and 6-1. The Spartans improved to 27-10 overall and 21-3 to wrap up the top seed in this weekend's NAC Tournament. Colby-Sawyer ends its season at 6-25 overall and 4-16 in conference action.
GAME ONE – Castleton 9, Colby-Sawyer 3
The Spartans scored twice in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead. Junior Dillon Benham (Lenox, Mass.) and junior Pat Mumford (Fairbanks, Alaska) each knocked in two runs with singles to the outfield.
Colby-Sawyer got two runs back in their half of the fourth on a two-run single to right field by senior
Andrew Pratt (New Sharon, Maine).
Castleton plated three more in the sixth thanks to a wild pitch, a passed ball and a Benham single to left.
The Chargers put a run across in their final at-bat on a
Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) single that scored
Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.).
Junior Charles Stapleford (Vergennes, Vt.) earned the win after four innings of work. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out seven.
Benham finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs for Castleton, while Mumford knocked in two runs on one hit in three at-bats.
For Colby-Sawyer, sophomore
AJ Cavossa (Foxboro, Mass.) took the loss after 2.2 innings with four earned runs. Senior
Andrew Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) worked an inning and gave up one unearned run, while freshman
Owen Cottle (Harwich, Mass.) struck out a pair in the seventh frame.
Henry finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Pratt had two RBIs and senior
Dougie Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) added two hits in four at-bats.
GAME TWO – Castleton 6, Colby-Sawyer 1
The Spartans struck early in game two with a Mitch Caron (Augusta, Maine) RBI single in the first and a Deagan Poland (Williston, Vt.) run-scoring single in the second.
Colby-Sawyer freshman
Ryan Cummiskey (Billerica, Mass.) knocked in a run in the fourth on a sac fly to right to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The fifth and sixth innings went scoreless, but Castleton put four runs across in the top of the seventh on three hits and three errors to secure the 6-1 victory.
Castleton's Joe Gratton (Pittsfield, Mass.) was credited with the win after two innings of scoreless work. He gave up two hits and struck out four as the Spartans used pitcher-by-committee.
Junior
Ryan Glendye (Litchfield, N.H.) struck out nine in six innings of work. He surrendered two earned runs on seven hits. Senior
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) tossed the final inning and wasn't charged with any earned runs on two hits.
Dougie Avellino added two more hits to his career total to give him 116 in just three years. He ranks 17th all-time in hits and third in career batting average at .356.
Sophomore
Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) and junior
Liam Datres de la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) finished with two hits apiece.
