NEW LONDON, N.H. - April 27, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team earned a 4-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Thomas College in game one of Friday's scheduled doubleheader.
Game two reached the third inning before being called due to rain. Thomas was leading 1-0 and will be resumed on Saturday at noon. Once that game is completed, the originally scheduled twin bill will begin.
The Terriers began the scoring in their first at-bat with a pair of runs. Freshman John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) earned a leadoff walk and then came around on a single by senior Alex Curtis (Monmouth, Maine). Later in the frame, senior Dominic Esposito (Portland, Maine) scored on a sac fly from sophomore Darren Kelly (Foxboro, Mass.).
Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the bottom of the second. Freshman
Charlie Danaher (Guilford, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to the left center gap. He then scored on a triple by
Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) to deep center field.
The Chargers took the lead in the third inning by plating two runs to go in front 3-2. Senior
Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.) singled to center to begin the rally. He then scored when junior
Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.) reached on a bunt single that forced an errant throw. Butler, who advanced to third on his bunt, then scored on a sac fly from senior
Dougie Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.).
The home team doubled its lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Avellino that scored Donovan.
Thomas threatened in the top of the seventh by having the first two hitters reach base on a walk and a single. After freshman
Noah Yeingst (Middleboro, Mass.) got senior Tristan Pena (Portland, Maine) to line out, senior closer
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) was called upon. Two pitches into his first hitter, Carbone induced a double play to end the game.
Yeingst went 6.1 innings and gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out three to earn his second win of the season. Carbone got two outs from one pitch to earn his second save of the season and fifth of his career to tie Kevin Keith '14 for the all-time saves lead.
Sophomore Cody Cousins (Wells, Maine) was charged with two earned runs in six innings of work for Thomas.
Donovan went 2-for-2 with two runs. Avellino knocked in a pair, while Henry added a two hits.
Curtis led the Terriers with two hits and an RBI.Â
