Baseball Defeated by Lyndon

NEW LONDON, N.H. - April 23, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team was defeated by Lyndon in both ends of today's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader. The Hornets won by scores of 9-5 and 16-2.

The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow, but in Lyndonville, Vt.

GAME ONE - LYNDON 9, COLBY-SAWYER 5

Lyndon scored six times in the second inning and never looked back. Sam Laroch knocked in a pair with a single to center, while four other Hornets recorded RBIs in the frame.

Colby-Sawyer got two back in the bottom half of the inning on a Tim Donovan single and a balk.

The Chargers cut the deficit in half in the third when Brendan Thurber reached on an error but earned an RBI when Austin Butler scored. Dougie Avellino then scored on a wild pitch.

The Hornets added three runs in the top of the fourth to put the game out of reach.

A highlight of the game for Colby-Sawyer came in the top of the fifth. Lyndon was threatening with runners on first and second and no one out. The runners were off with the pitch and Andre Eason Jr. hit a sharp liner to the shortstop who caught the ball, threw to second, which was then relayed to first to complete a triple play.

Avellino knocked in Butler on a double in the seventh, but Lyndon hung on for the 9-5 win.

Sam Ogenoff went 3-for-4 to lead Lyndon. Ryder Thorton added two hits, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

Doug Avelino led Colby-Sawyer with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Codi Smith pitched four innings to earn the win for Lyndon. He allowed four runs and four hits while striking out five. Matt Page allowed only an unearned run over the final three innings to pick up the save.  AJ Cavossa started for Colby-Sawyer, lasting only 1.2 innings and taking the loss. He gave up six runs, but only two earned. Andrew Clay pitched two innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit and striking out a pair.

GAME TWO - LYNDON 16, COLBY-SAWYER 2

Lyndon used a five-run third to take control of the night cap. The Hornets would score more than two runs in four of the seven innings en route to the 16-2 victory.

Ryan Cordiero had pair of doubles with three RBI and three runs scored to pace the Hornets. Zak Johnson went 3-for-4 with two RBI. The conference's leading hitter, Andre Eason Jr. drove in three on two doubles.

Tim Unczur led the Chargers with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Unczur also tossed a scoreless inning of relief with one hit and one strikeout. Avellino added two more hits in two at-bats.

Ben Rollins earned the win for Lyndon after five innings of one-run ball.

Joseph Scurto took the loss, going five innings for the Chargers, allowing nine runs, four earned, on four hits while striking out four and walking four.
