Baseball Falls at UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine - April 22, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team fell at UMF in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Beavers won 5-4 (8 inn.) and 14-5 to earn the series sweep. 

Colby-Sawyer returns home on Monday to host Lyndon for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE - UMF 5, COLBY-SAWYER 4 (8 inn.)

The home team put a run across in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Chase Malloy singled.

The Chargers tied the score in their next at-bat on a double-steal that scored Brendan Thurber

In the bottom of the fourth, UMF plated two on a single from Tyler Flayhan and a sac fly from Jimmy Parks. 

Colby-Sawyer was able to tie the score once again in the top of the fifth. Alec Burns recorded his first collegiate knock with a double to center that scored Tim Donovan. Burns then came around on a Joey Fenuccio single to tie the score at 3-3. 

The Beavers went in front 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Colby-Sawyer miscue. 

The visitors were able to rally in their last at-bat with a run in the seventh. Fenuccio doubled home Austin Butler to knot the game at 4-4.

The Chargers were able to hold UMF in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't put a run across in the top of the eighth. UMF walked off with the win when Jake  Bessey flied out to center to score Gavin Arsenault with the game-winning run.

Noah Yeingst went six innings on the mound and gave up three earned runs and struck out five. Andrew Carbone was saddled with the loss after giving up one unearned run on one hit in 1.2 innings. 

Fenuccio finished 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Chargers. Thurber and Butler added two hits apiece. 

Ryan Pratt went the first seven frames for UMF and gave up four runs. Justin Rodrigue earned the win after a clean inning of relief. 

GAME TWO - UMF 14, COLBY-SAWYER 5

Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring double from Brendan Thurber, an RBI groundout from Charlie Danaher and a sac fly from Drew Inglesi

Danaher knocked in his second run in as many at-bats with a single in the third to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead.

UMF responded with five runs in the bottom of the third. The big hit was a grand slam off the bat of Chase Malloy.

The Beavers added a run in the fifth, which was answered by a run from Colby-Sawyer in the top of the sixth to make the game 6-5 in favor of the home team. 

UMF put the game out of reach in the bottom of the six by scoring eight times on seven hits.
