Baseball Splits with Cazenovia

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – March 11, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a doubleheader with Cazenovia on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Complex. Colby-Sawyer won the first game 3-1, before falling 8-6 in game two.

The Chargers are 2-2 and will a 9-inning game tomorrow against Keene State at 5:15 at the Lake Myrtle Complex once again. Cazenovia, of the North Eastern Athletic Conference, is 1-1 and will play MCLA tomorrow morning.

GAME ONE – COLBY-SAWYER 3, CAZENOVIA 1

After a scoreless top of the first for Colby-Sawyer, Cazenovia got on the scoreboard in the bottom half. The first three Wildcats reached base on a pair of singles and a walk, but Colby-Sawyer senior Chris Hood (Manchester, N.H.) allowed just one run after retiring the next three hitters.

Colby-Sawyer senior Dougie Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) came up with the big hit in the top of the third plating a pair on a double down the left field line. Avellino then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) to give the Chargers the 3-1 lead.

The Wildcats mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh after an error and a single put runners on second and third with two out. Colby-Sawyer senior Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) came in to shut the door forcing a fly out to center to earn the save, the fourth of his career.

Hood went 6.2 innings, allowing just the one run on six hits to earn the victory. He struck out seven.

Senior Drew Inglesi (Franklin, Mass.) finished with two hits for the Chargers.

Cazenovia's Ryan Cooper went the distance, but took the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits.

GAME TWO – CAZENOVIA 8, COLBY-SAWYER 6

The Wildcats raced out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and a run in the second and fourth.

Colby-Sawyer evened the game in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Freshman Charlie Danaher (Guilford, N.H.) hit a two-run double to center field, while Thurber and freshman Danny McCrystal (Hudson, N.H.) also had an RBI in the frame.

Cazenovia responded in its next at-bat with four runs on five hits to take an 8-4 lead.

The Chargers rallied again in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of RBIs on a bases loaded walk and a hit by pitch, but that would be as close as Colby-Sawyer would come, falling 8-6.

Senior Andrew Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) tossed 1.1 innings of relief with one hit and one strikeout. Sophomore AJ Cavossa (Foxborough, Mass.) struck out two in .2 innings.

Collin Pickett led the Wildcats with three hits.
