Bell Scores 1000th Career Point in Double OT Victory over Castleton

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 20, 2018 – Colby-Sawyer junior Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) scored the team's first nine points of the game to become the 19th player in program history to eclipse 1000 career points as the Chargers won a double-overtime thriller, 99-95, over Castleton University in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 17-8 and will play second seed Husson in the NAC Semifinals hosted by New England College on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Castleton ends its season at 12-14.

In a back and forth game that featured seven ties and 11 lead changes, the two teams played their third straight tight game this season. At the end of regulation, Castleton trailed by two but received a bucket from senior Tondi Mushandu (Zimbabwe) with 54 seconds to play. The Chargers held the ball for the remainder of the frame but could not find the game-winner and the game went to overtime tied 72-72.

Each team scored six points in the first extra period. Colby-Sawyer was in front 78-74 with just over two minutes to go, but Mushandu scored two-straight baskets to pull the Spartans even and send the game to a second overtime.

Colby-Sawyer rattled off the first eight points of the second overtime on a pair of treys from Bell and Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) and two Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) free throws. Castleton came within four later in the period after a Julian Santos (Cordoba, Spain) three-pointer made the game 94-90 with 24 ticks on the clock. Colby-Sawyer was able to make free throws down the stretch to secure the 99-95 victory. The Chargers made 14-of-18 free throws in the extra stanzas.

Bell notched his 1000th career point at the 17:38 mark of the first half and finished the game by tying a career-high with 34 points. He now has 1027 for his career. Senior Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) moved into seventh in career three-pointers with 173 after making five tonight. He finished with 19 points. Sophomore Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) recorded his eighth double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. He made all nine free throw attempts. Freshman Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas) grabbed 12 rebounds. Sophomore Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) added 10 points, five boards and four assists.

Mushandu led Castleton with 23 points on 11-of-22 shooting and a game best 14 rebounds. Junior Jordan Nelson (Troy, N.Y.) finished with 15 points and 11 assists. Santo added 17 points on five made three-pointers and a pair of free throws. Freshman Denis LeCours (Hardwick, Vt.) was 7-of-13 from beyond the arc to finish with 21 points in 26 minutes off the bench. Freshman Richard Walker (Swanton, Vt.) tallied a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

???????Castleton finished the game shooting 51.4% from the floor and 51.9% from beyond the arc, but made just 5-of-16 free throw attempts. Colby-Sawyer was 38.4% from the floor and 30% from long range, but was an impressive 21-of-25 at the charity stripe.  

Each team had 48 rebounds.
