LATHAM, N.Y. – May 7, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer men's tennis team won its fifth straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC)/North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover title after defeating Penn St. Berks, 9-0, on Sunday at the Tri-City Tennis Club
Today's meeting was the first between to the two teams. Colby-Sawyer improves to 14-10 and will find out on Monday when and where the team will play in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Penn St. Berks ends its season at 10-6.
Gustav Jigrup (Gothenburg, Vastra Frolunda, Sweden) and
Alex Wright (St. Austell, Cornwall, England) got the Chargers on the board with an 8-3 win over Will Byler (Lancaster, Pa.) and Ryan Fritz (Ephrata, Pa.) at the top spot. Colby-Sawyer's No. 2 duo of
Dean Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.) and
Ryan Sawyer (Edgartown, Mass.) defeated Omar Rahmy (Cairo, Egypt) and Mostafa Rahmy (Cairo, Egypt) 8-1.
Cass McCann (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and
Andrew Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.) made it a doubles sweep for Colby-Sawyer with an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Diego Olazagasti (Exeter, Pa.) and Nick Volk (Kempton, Pa.).
Jigrup carried over his strong play from doubles and dispatched Byler 6-0, 6-0 at the top flight to bring Colby-Sawyer within a point from clinching.
Boodakian secured the win with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Mostafa Rahmy at fifth singles to send the Chargers to their fifth straight NCAA Tournament.
McCann then defeated Olazagasti 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, while Wright cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Fritz at the second flight.
Sawyer won his No. 4 match over Omar Rahmy 6-2, 6-3 and
Ryan Broderick (Londonderry, N.H.) finished the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Volk at No. 6.
