CASTINE, Maine - April 15, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team scored five times in each half to edge Maine Maritime, 10-8, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will step out of conference on Wednesday for a road contest at Worcester State. Maine Maritime drops to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the NAC. The Mariners host Thomas on Wednesday.
The Chargers scored three-unanswered goals to the open up the first half before the Mariners answered with back-to-back goals to close the gap to 3-2 at 12:34. Colby-Sawyer went on a two-goal run to close out the first half with a 5-2 lead.
The Mariners began the second half with a tally to close the gap to 5-3. The Chargers then went on a three-goal run to take an 8-3 lead. The teams exchanged the next four goals to make the score 10-5 in favor of Colby-Sawyer with 8:38 to play. The Mariners were able to score three more times in the final minutes, but the Colby-Sawyer defense was up to the task to secure the 10-8 victory.
Junior
Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.) led the Chargers with a hat trick, and two assists while also tallying a game-high six draw controls. She now has 156 career points to tie her with
Laurel Bauer '13 for seventh all-time. Sophomore
Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) and junior
Carli Chiodo (Madbury, N.H.) added two goals each, while Schuster also led the team with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Maine Maritime was led by senior Tori Cooper's (Saco, Maine) hat trick. She added three ground balls and tallying three draw controls. Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) ended the afternoon with two goals. Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.
Senior
Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, Conn.) worked the first half in net for the Chargers and made eight saves to earn the win. She now has 300 career saves to move into sixth in program history. Freshman
Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.) made seven saves in the final 30 minutes.
Sierra James had 10 saves for the Mariners.
