Schuster Scores Game-Winner in Final Minute to Lift Chargers to 13-12 Win at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – March 23, 2017 - Sophomore Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal with 50 seconds remaining to lift the Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 victory at Norwich University on Thursday night.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-0 and will open conference play on Saturday with its first home game of the season against UMaine-Farmington at 1 p.m. Norwich drops to 2-1.

In a tightly contested game throughout, the Chargers held a slim 12-11 lead with 1:02 to go when Norwich freshman Jordan Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) knotted the score. Colby-Sawyer then took control of the ensuing draw, and Sierra Schuster did the rest as she found the back of the net with the game-winner with 50 seconds on the clock.

Schuster led all players with six points on five goals and an assist. Bailey Starr (Barre, Vt.) finished with three goals and a game-high eight draw controls. Carli Chiodo (Madbury, N.H.) and Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.) added two goals apiece, while Brittany Ireland (Amherst, N.H.) contributed a goal and two assists.

Norwich received two goals from five different players. Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) and Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.) led the way with two tallies and an assist. Both players also picked up six ground balls.

Colby-Sawyer sprinted out to a 3-0 lead through the game's first 2:05, but Norwich was quick to close the game to 3-2. The Chargers then led 5-2, but saw the lead evaporate with four straight goals from Norwich to give the home team a 6-5 advantage. Goals by Schuster and Starr closed the half for Colby-Sawyer and gave the Chargers a 7-6 edge at the break.

The second half would feature four ties with the latest coming with the score 12-12 before Schuster found the game-winner.

Freshman Kailyn Lapham earned the win after working the second half for the Chargers with six saves. Norwich netminder Janice Bolton drew the loss, allowing 13 goals on 19 shots.
