WATERVILLE, Maine - February 21, 2017 - Freshman
Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) poured in a career best 30 points, but it was not enough as the Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell at Thomas, 77-71, in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.
The Chargers end their season at 12-14. Thomas improves to 14-12 and will travel to Bangor, Maine on Friday to play second seed Castleton in the NAC semifinals.
Coffey was 11-of-22 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. He added nine rebounds. Sophomore
Milani Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was second on the team with 13 points, while sophomore
Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) rounded out the Colby-Sawyer scorers with eight points to go along with nine boards.
Jordan Derosby (Waterville, Maine) netted a team-high 17 points and pulled in four rebounds for the Terriers while Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) finished with 15 points and five boards. Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine) and Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) chipped in with 14 points apiece.
The Terriers jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind quick layups from Simon and Gonzalez.
Milani Hicks responded with a bucket and a three-point play for the Chargers to take a 9-7 lead.
Midway through the half, the Terriers extended their lead to 12 points at 26-14. After a 14-5 run for Colby-Sawyer,
Patrick Coffey knocked down a three to tie the game at 31-31. The Chargers finished the half with a three-pointer from
Taylor Grande and back-to-back hoops from Coffey to take a 40-35 lead at the break.
Colby-Sawyer held a small advantage to open the second until Derosby buried a three for Thomas to tie the game at 44-44. The Terriers then used a 7-1 run to go in front six with 12:40 remaining. Coffey continued to have the hot hand for the Chargers as he scored eight-straight points to pull Colby-Sawyer within a bucket at for the Chargers to stay within two midway through the half.
Late in the second, Mackinnon hit a three and Tailour Hall (Jacksonville, Florida) finished a layup to put the Terriers up by six with 4:36 left. Coffey answered back with a jumper and four free throws to keep it a one-possession game.
Down by six with 23 seconds remaining, Coffey added another three-pointer to bring Colby-Sawyer with three, but Simon knocked down free throws in the final seconds to secure the 77-71 victory for Thomas.
The Chargers won the glass 47-35, but Thomas had a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint.
